Dong Yul Lee, an 84-year-old Korean man, died Monday, April 11, nine days after he was fatally beaten near South Grand Avenue and West 8th Street in downtown, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Shortly before 3:40 p.m. on April 2, officers from the Los Angeles Police Department’s Central Division were flagged down to help a man who was being assaulted, said LAPD Det. Doug Pierce.
A man walked up to Lee, began yelling at him, then punched Lee, Pierce said.
The man then kicked him and stomped on him.
A nearby security guard witnessed the attack and pepper sprayed the alleged attacker, later identified by authorities as LaFawn Moses Parker, a 46-year-old black man.
Lee was taken to a hospital, where he remained until he was pronounced dead April 11.
