A story for every victim

Denzel Wesley Jones, 22

Denzel Wesley Jones, a 22-year-old black man, was fatally shot Sunday, July 29, in the 11900 block of Willowbrook Avenue in the Willowbrook area of South Los Angeles, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Jones was standing outside a friend’s home, talking with a small group of friends, when a man walked up and began shooting in their direction shortly before 1 a.m., said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Joe Mendoza.

The gunfire struck Jones and one of his friends, a Latina adult, Mendoza said.

Jones was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:02 a.m. according to coroner’s records. The cause of death was listed as multiple gunshot wounds.

The Latina was shot in the cheek and taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Mendoza said.

Investigators don’t have a motive for the shooting. Jones, a resident of Compton, was not a gang member, Mendoza said, and had gotten off work shortly before the shooting occurred.

An online fundraiser has been started to help Jones' family with expenses.

The suspect, described as a black male in his 20s, was seen running south the scene.
