Karen Tobar, a 23-year-old Latina, was fatally stabbed Friday, Feb. 23, in the 15000 block of Crestknoll Drive in Sylmar, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
A park ranger found Tobar’s body about 6:15 a.m. while opening the park for the day, according to coroner’s records.
Tobar was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:35 a.m., according to coroner’s records.
Detectives are trying to determine why Tobar was in the park.

Rocio Sandoval, a 38-year-old Latina, died on Sunday, Feb. 11, after she was shot in the 1500 block of West McKinley Avenue in Azusa, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Sandoval and a male friend were talking in a car parked on McKinley Avenue just east of South Irwindale Avenue about 9:50 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 9, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Joe Mendoza.
The car was parked in a commercial area, near a local pub, Mendoza said. Sandoval was sitting in the front passenger seat and her friend, a 35-year-old Latino, was sitting in the driver’s seat, when a man they didn’t know came up to the car and began talking, Mendoza said.
“It wasn’t even an angry conversation, but all of a sudden the male produced a handgun and began shooting into the vehicle,” Mendoza said.
Carrie Marie Trotter, a 30-year-old black woman, was shot and killed Friday, Feb. 9, near South Western Avenue and West 58th Street in the Chesterfield Square area of South Los Angeles, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Trotter and her sister had just stepped off a bus about 2 p.m. when they encountered a man who pulled up in a dark-colored Nissan Altima, said Los Angeles Police Det. Chris Barling.
The man began shooting at the women from inside the car, striking Trotter, police said. The other woman was not injured.
Trotter was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 10:17 p.m., according to coroner’s records.

Jessica Torres, a 21-year-old Latina, died Saturday, Feb. 3, two days after she was shot in the 7800 block of Van Nuys Boulevard in Panorama City, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
About 2:30 a.m. on Feb. 1, Torres was driving north on Van Nuys Boulevard in a gray Ford Fusion with two others when a vehicle pulled alongside the car, said Los Angeles Police Det. Richard Moakley.
A person began shooting from the other vehicle, and Torres was struck, Moakley said.
The vehicle continued north on Van Nuys Boulevard. Torres, who had been shot in the head, was taken to a hospital, and she was pronounced dead on Feb. 3 at 2:44 p.m., according to coroner’s records.

Pepper Gardner, a 56-year-old white woman, was pronounced dead on Saturday, Jan. 13, after suffering “trauma to the body” in the 1100 block of West Avenue N12 in Palmdale, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s homicide investigators.
Deputies went to Gardner’s modest Palmdale home around 2:25 p.m. after her daughter-in-law asked authorities to check on her family, said Lt. John Corina.
The daughter was worried, Corina said, because she hadn’t been able to reach anyone at the house where her disabled brother, Richard Gardner III, 52, lived with their father, Richard Gardner II, 78, and the elder man's wife, Pepper Gardner.
When deputies arrived they found the elder Richard Gardner II dead in the small, single-level house, Corina said. A short while later, investigators found his wife and son dead in another part of the house.

Iva Lee Garrett, a 75-year-old white woman, was shot and killed Thursday, Jan. 11, in the 11800 block of Shoemaker Avenue in South Whittier, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Garrett and her husband, Columbus Gerald Garrett, 74, were in the living room of their home around 9 p.m. when their daughter, who was in the back of the house, heard two gunshots, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Joe Mendoza.
The daughter came into the living room, saw her parents had been shot and called 911, Mendoza said.
Investigators found Iva Garrett on the couch. She had been shot in the head, according to coroner’s records. Her husband was in his wheelchair beside her, with a gunshot wound to his head and a revolver lying near his chair.

Miracle Treasure McGowan, a 15-year-old black girl, died Thursday, Jan. 11, after being shot in the 9300 block of South Hooper Avenue in the Florence-Firestone neighborhood of South Los Angeles, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Miracle was sitting in the front passenger seat of her mother’s SUV, with her mother at the wheel, when someone began shooting at the car around 9 p.m., Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Joe Mendoza said.
The car was parked next to the curb outside the family’s home when the shooting began, and Miracle was closest to the gunfire, Mendoza said. Friends told KCBS-TV Channel 2 that Miracle, her mother and a female friend had gotten into the car to go get something to eat.
