Sigmund Thomas Chornes, a 37-year-old black man, was shot and killed Sunday, Feb. 2, in the 4000 block of Abourne Road in Baldwin Hills-Crenshaw, according to the Los Angeles County coroner’s office.
Chornes was hanging out at a relative’s home and had just watched the Super Bowl when he decided he wanted to spend the night, family and friends said.
Chornes went outside to his car to grab a blanket about 9:45 p.m. Then two people in a light-colored SUV drove up, said LAPD Det. Chris Barling.
One person got out of the SUV and asked Chornes where he was from. Chornes said he wasn’t from anywhere, witnesses told police, and the person shot him multiple times, Barling said.
“He wasn’t a gangster,” Barling said of the victim.
The gunman then got back into the SUV and fled southbound on Abourne Road.
