Redel Kentel Jones, a 30-year-old black woman, was killed by police Wednesday, Aug. 12, in the 4100 block of Marlton Avenue in the Baldwin Hills-Crenshaw neighborhood of Los Angeles, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s office records.
The incident began about 1:40 p.m. when Los Angeles police received a call about a pharmacy robbery in the 3700 block of Santa Rosalia Drive, LAPD Det. Meghan Aguilar told The Times.
Employees at the pharmacy said the robber was a woman who was carrying a large knife, Aguilar said. The woman allegedly handed a note to a cashier, demanding money, and then left the pharmacy with a cash-filled envelope.
Officers began searching the area and found a woman matching the description about 20 minutes later in an alley near Marlton Avenue and Santo Tomas Drive, Aguilar said.

Desirae L. Jenkins, a 28-year-old black woman, was shot and killed Monday, Aug. 3, in the 3800 block of Potomac Avenue in Baldwin Hills/Crenshaw, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Shortly after 5 a.m., police responded to a 911 call and found Jenkins and a 68-year-old man in the living area of a studio apartment complex, LAPD Det. Rick Gordon said. Jenkins was pronounced dead at 5:38 a.m. at the scene.
Detectives believe the man, who was in a romantic relationship with Jenkins, shot the woman, then killed himself. There are no outstanding suspects.

Ervin Brown, a 52-year-old black man, was shot and killed April 1 near Buckingham Road and Santa Rosalia Drive in Baldwin Hills/Crenshaw, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
About 3 a.m., Brown was standing on the corner when a vehicle approached him and a person fired multiple gunshots, said Det. Dave Garrido of the Los Angeles Police Department. It is unknown if the gunman got out of the car or opened fire from inside the vehicle.
Brown was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:24 a.m., according to coroner’s records.

Eddie Ray Smith Jr., a 43-year-old black man, was found dead Sunday, Nov. 30, at the Rancho Cienega Sports Complex in the 5000 block of Rodeo Road in Baldwin Hills/Crenshaw according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
People in the area flagged down authorities to report seeing an unresponsive man, said LAPD Det. Dave Garrido.
Police also received a call of an assault in the area, but initially there were no witnesses.
Smith was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:45 a.m., said Ed Winter, assistant chief of investigations for the coroner’s office.
Throughout the investigation, detectives determined that two people had attempted to rob Smith and had beaten him, causing his death.

Sigmund Thomas Chornes, a 37-year-old black man, was shot and killed Sunday, Feb. 2, in the 4000 block of Abourne Road in Baldwin Hills-Crenshaw, according to the Los Angeles County coroner’s office.
Chornes was hanging out at a relative’s home and had just watched the Super Bowl when he decided he wanted to spend the night, family and friends said.
Chornes went outside to his car to grab a blanket about 9:45 p.m. Then two people in a light-colored SUV drove up, said LAPD Det. Chris Barling.
One person got out of the SUV and asked Chornes where he was from. Chornes said he wasn’t from anywhere, witnesses told police, and the person shot him multiple times, Barling said.
“He wasn’t a gangster,” Barling said of the victim.
The gunman then got back into the SUV and fled southbound on Abourne Road.

Roshon Dwayne Davis, a 26-year-old black man, died Thursday, Jan. 30, after being stabbed a day earlier on the northeast corner of South La Brea Avenue and Coliseum Street in Baldwin Hills/Crenshaw, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Davis was stabbed about 3 p.m. on Jan. 29 after an altercation with a person at a gas station, said LAPD Det. Chris Barling.
Davis staggered to his home in the 3800 block of Gibraltar Avenue and shouted for help. Another person called an ambulance, and Davis was taken to a hospital.
Davis was pronounced dead at noon Jan. 30, said Ed Winter, a coroner’s spokesman. An autopsy showed that he died of a stab wound to the chest. Detectives are looking for witnesses.

James Leroy Breedlove, a 40-year-old black man, was killed Saturday, Sept. 14, in the 5000 block of Rodeo Road in Baldwin Hills/Crenshaw, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Breedlove was standing in the parking lot of the Rancho Cienega Sports Complex when a person driving a light-colored Ford Expedition ran him over, LAPD Det. Supervisor Chris Barling said.
The person then got out of his car and began to strike Breedlove with a pipe, Barling said.
Breedlove was pronounced dead at a hospital at 4:43 p.m., according to coroner’s records.
He died of multiple traumatic injuries, an autopsy showed.
Alex Hodge, 50, was arrested Sept. 16 in connection with Breedlove’s death, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department online records.

Raylond Lamar Hughley, a 24-year-old black man, died Sunday, July 14, after being shot in the 4600 block of West Don Miguel Drive in Baldwin Hills-Crenshaw, according to L.A. County coroner’s records.
Hughley left a party after getting into a dispute shortly before midnight July 13, said Det. Dave Garrido with the LAPD’s Southwest Division. Hughley got into his car, and a person walked up and asked where he was from, Garrido said.
Hughley said he wasn’t from a gang and was shot; the gunman then fled in a light-colored car, Garrido said.
Hughley died at the scene at 12:26 a.m., moments before an ambulance was set to take him to the hospital, according to coroner’s records.

Jazper Hudson, a 22-year-old black man, was fatally wounded on Thursday, May 30 in the 3800 block of Rodeo Road in Baldwin Hills/Crenshaw, according to L.A. County coroner’s records.
Hudson and a male friend left a gas station at the corner of Rodeo and Crenshaw Boulevard in a Jaguar sedan when a dark vehicle pulled alongside them and shot into the car, striking both men, said LAPD Det. Sal LaBarbera.
Hudson died on the way to the hospital at 10:05 p.m., coroner’s records show. The friend was treated for a gunshot wound to his left arm.
On June 14, police arrested 20-year-old Everald Fisher on suspicion of murder, LaBarbera said.

Edward Clark, a 28-year-old black man, was shot and killed by police Wednesday, Dec. 12, in the 4700 block of Don Ricardo Drive in Baldwin Hills/Crenshaw, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
Authorities responded to a domestic violence call at 7 p.m. and were met by a woman who said Clark had struck her, said LAPD Officer Cleon Joseph.
When officers entered the home, Clark barricaded himself in a bedroom with two children. An LAPD SWAT team was called and negotiations ensued for hours.
SWAT officers entered the room about 5 a.m. Wednesday and shot the suspect, police said. No officers were injured, Joseph said.
KTLA-TV (Channel 5) reported that Clark was the father of the 6-year-old boy and 3-year-old girl. They were not injured.

Candice Altamirano, a 27-year-old Latina, was shot and killed Sunday, Dec. 2, in the 3700 block of Nicolet Avenue in Baldwin Hills/Crenshaw, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
Ed Winter, spokesman for the coroner's office, said Altamirano was driving a car about 3:15 a.m. when an unknown person walked up and shot her.
The victim was taken to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 4:02 a.m.
[Updated Dec. 12: Homicide Det. Kenneth White, who is handling the investigation, said no arrests have been made. Investigators do not know if there is more than one suspect in connection with the killing.

Lynnard Baker Jr., a 17-year-old black man, died Thursday, Feb. 2, two days after he was shot in the 5300 block of Rodeo Road in Baldwin Hills/Crenshaw, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
Baker and another person tried to break into the home shortly after 9 p.m. Tuesday. As Baker entered through a window, the commotion surprised the homeowner, who retrieved his gun.
Fearing for his life, the homeowner shot Baker as he was climbing through the window. The second suspect then fled.
Authorities were called and Baker was taken to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in critical condition.
Despite treatment, he succumbed to his injuries several days later, said LAPD Criminal Gang Homicide Det. Mike Applegate, who is handling the case.
Coroner's records show Baker died from a gunshot wound to the head.
