Juan Manuel Avila Jr., a 20-year-old Latino, died Tuesday, April 25, after he was shot by Long Beach police in the 10000 block of Foster Road in Bellflower, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Long Beach police were near Paramount and Artesia boulevards about 6 a.m., when they received a Lo-Jack notification about a stolen vehicle, according to a police news release. Officers located the green 2000 Honda Accord, but the vehicle sped away, according to police.
Police pursued the sedan for almost 50 minutes through several cities. During the pursuit, a handgun was thrown out of the vehicle and was recovered near Lakewood Boulevard and Rosecrans Avenue, the release said.

Andreas Lara, a 20-year-old Latino, died Sunday, Feb. 26, after he was shot in the 9400 block of Rosecrans Avenue in Bellflower, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Lara was walking in the alley behind the 9400 block of Rosecrans with two friends around 5 p.m. when a sedan drove up beside them, said L.A. County Sheriff’s Sgt. Marcelo Quintero.
Two men in the car confronted the three friends about whether they had any gang affiliations, Quintero said.
“At some point words were exchanged, and we believe the passenger in the car fired several rounds, hitting Mr. Lara,” Quintero said.
Lara was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead at 5:35 p.m., according to coroner’s records. His two friends ran when the shooting began, and were not struck by gunfire, Quintero said. They returned to the scene ...
Kenia Buckner, a 31-year-old black woman, was shot and killed Monday, Jan. 16, in the 16200 block of Cornuta Avenue in Bellflower, according to Los Angeles County authorities.
Buckner was home with her three children around 1:35 p.m. when her ex-boyfriend, the children’s father, walked into her apartment, said sheriff’s Lt. Joe Mendoza.
“In front of their children, in their living room, he pulls out a gun and fires toward the victim multiple times, striking her at least one time in upper torso,” Mendoza said.
Buckner was pronounced dead in her living room at 1:48 p.m., Mendoza said.
Investigators are searching for the ex-boyfriend, identified as Antowan Parker, a 27-year-old black man, who was last seen running south on Cornuta after the shooting, Mendoza said.
