Michael Antonio Ochoa, a 34-year-old Latino, died Tuesday, Sept. 26, after he was shot at Idabel Avenue and Fairhaven Street in Carson, according to Los Angeles County sheriff’s investigators.
Ochoa was walking near his home around 2:30 a.m. when he was shot, but no one reported seeing the shooting, Lt. Joe Mendoza said.
Deputies went to the intersection after someone called 911 and reported hearing gunshots.
“We think he was hanging out, just walking from one place to another area he frequents,” Mendoza said. “When the deputies arrived, he was lying on the ground, unconscious, with at least one gunshot wound to the body.”
It’s not known whether the shooter was on foot or in a vehicle, Mendoza said. “All we have is people who heard a shooting.”

Jennifer Ball, a 36-year-old white woman, was found beaten to death Tuesday, Sept. 5, under the South Figueroa Street overpass, south of West Griffith Street in Carson, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
A person walking early that morning saw Ball lying on the Dominguez Channel Bike Path, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Joe Mendoza said.
The pedestrian called 911, and paramedics pronounced Ball dead at the scene at 7:14 a.m., according to coroner’s records. The cause of death was listed as blunt force trauma to the head.
Investigators think Ball was homeless and was living along the channel, Mendoza said. No weapon was found, and authorities have no motive for the killing.

Jose Gallegos, a 50-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Monday, July 3, in the 22000 block of South Neptune Avenue in Carson, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Gallegos, a handyman who lived in Carson, had gone to the home of a relative to do some work around 8:30 a.m., Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Sgt. Guillermo Morales said.
The relative, Craig Villa, met Gallegos in the driveway, and the two began to argue, Morales said.
“There was an ongoing family dispute,” Morales said. “He was supposed to do some handyman work, but then this ongoing simmering feud reared its head.”
Gallegos left and began walking back to his car. He was in the street when Villa, 40, pulled a gun and shot him multiple times, striking him in the upper torso, Morales said.

Frank Hernandez, an 85-year-old Latino, died Wednesday, June 7, after being assaulted in the 300 block of East 220th Street in Carson, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Hernandez was walking in his neighborhood around 10 a.m. May 31, heading for a nearby liquor store to purchase lottery tickets, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Derrick Alfred said.
When he was about two blocks from his home, a man ran up behind Hernandez and struck him the head, Alfred said. When Hernandez fell, the man took his wallet.
The attacker then ran to a nearby home, where a man was standing outside the garage. The thief demanded money from that man before striking him in the face, Alfred said. He ran away when the man’s wife came outside.

Jorge Victor, a 33-year-old Latino, died Sunday, Jan. 22, after he was shot by police in the 2700 block of East 220th St. in Carson, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
About 10:50 p.m. on Jan. 21, Long Beach police responded to report about gunshots in the 900 block of Via Wanda, according to a news release. They found a man with a gunshot wound to the chest. He was taken to a local hospital in critical condition and later released.
Gang enforcement detectives looked for the gunman through the night. About 11 a.m. on Jan. 22, detectives identified Victor as the gunman and went to his house in Carson.

Jose Guadalupe Trigueros, a 21-year-old Latino, was shot and killed on Sunday, Dec. 18, at 5 Wells Fargo Lane in Carson, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Trigueros was walking east near his home in a gated community of apartments and condominiums when a man walked up behind him about 12:43 p.m., said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Joe Mendoza.
The man pulled out a gun and began shooting at Trigueros, striking him multiple times in the upper torso, Mendoza said. The suspect, described as a black male in his 20s, then ran west through a walkway between two apartment buildings and out of sight.
Trigueros was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead at 1:27 p.m., according to coroner’s records.

Gregory and two other men were walking toward the entrance of a warehouse about 11:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 10, where people had gathered for what was billed as a “Naughty or Nice Pajama Jam” on social media, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Sgt. Richard Biddle.

Kurtis Wayne McMorries, a 46-year-old white man, died of multiple gunshot wounds Friday, Nov. 4, in the 22200 block of Catskill Avenue in Carson, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
McMorries was sleeping in the garage of a home about 10 a.m. when he heard someone attempting to open the garage door, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Steve Jauch said.
McMorries got up to open the door and was confronted by a man with a gun, who began firing.
McMorries’ girlfriend, who was also in the garage, told authorities that the gunman ran out of bullets, Jauch said, then fled on a motorcycle.
