Paul Lawrence Freeman, a 57-year-old black man, died Thursday, Feb. 11, after he was shot in the 19800 block of South Leapwood Avenue in Carson, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Freeman was at home, where he lived with his brother and mother, when he and his brother, Rodney Freeman, 56, got into an argument around 2 p.m., said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Joe Mendoza.
Paul Freeman picked up a baseball bat and began swinging it at his brother, Mendoza said.
The younger brother had a gun, Mendoza said, and when his brother hit him with the baseball bat, Rodney Freeman shot him in the chest.
Paul Freeman was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:47 p.m., according to coroner’s records.

Marquez Dejon Trammel, a 21-year-old black man, was shot and killed Thursday, Oct. 26, in the 19400 block of Pricetown Avenue in Carson, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Trammel was standing in front of his home with another young man when they were approached by two black males about 8:50 p.m., said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Rodney Moore.
The newcomers “said something to the victims and immediately after started shooting at the victims,” Moore said. “The victims ran away, but they were both struck by gunfire.”
Trammel was pronounced dead at the scene at 9 p.m., according to coroner’s records. The other victim was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Moore said.
It’s not clear whether Trammel and the other victim are related or just friends, Moore said.

Franklin Bamba Atoigue, a 46-year-old Pacific Islander, died Friday, Oct. 6, after he was shot in the 23500 block of Panama Avenue in Carson, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Atoigue was visiting friends in Carson and they were hanging out in the garage when someone knocked on the door at 5:35 a.m., Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Joe Mendoza said.
When Atoigue opened the door, someone outside opened fire, striking him in the torso, Mendoza said.
Atoigue was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 7:11 a.m., according to coroner’s records.
The shooter fled on foot, Mendoza said. Investigators don’t have a description of the gunman or a motive for the shooting, although they say it does not appear to be gang-related.

Michael Antonio Ochoa, a 34-year-old Latino, died Tuesday, Sept. 26, after he was shot at Idabel Avenue and Fairhaven Street in Carson, according to Los Angeles County sheriff’s investigators.
Ochoa was walking near his home around 2:30 a.m. when he was shot, but no one reported seeing the shooting, Lt. Joe Mendoza said.
Deputies went to the intersection after someone called 911 and reported hearing gunshots.
“We think he was hanging out, just walking from one place to another area he frequents,” Mendoza said. “When the deputies arrived, he was lying on the ground, unconscious, with at least one gunshot wound to the body.”
It’s not known whether the shooter was on foot or in a vehicle, Mendoza said. “All we have is people who heard a shooting.”

Jennifer Ball, a 36-year-old white woman, was found beaten to death Tuesday, Sept. 5, under the South Figueroa Street overpass, south of West Griffith Street in Carson, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
A person walking early that morning saw Ball lying on the Dominguez Channel Bike Path, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Joe Mendoza said.
The pedestrian called 911, and paramedics pronounced Ball dead at the scene at 7:14 a.m., according to coroner’s records. The cause of death was listed as blunt force trauma to the head.
Investigators think Ball was homeless and was living along the channel, Mendoza said. No weapon was found, and authorities have no motive for the killing.

Jose Gallegos, a 50-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Monday, July 3, in the 22000 block of South Neptune Avenue in Carson, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Gallegos, a handyman who lived in Carson, had gone to the home of a relative to do some work around 8:30 a.m., Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Sgt. Guillermo Morales said.
The relative, Craig Villa, met Gallegos in the driveway, and the two began to argue, Morales said.
“There was an ongoing family dispute,” Morales said. “He was supposed to do some handyman work, but then this ongoing simmering feud reared its head.”
Gallegos left and began walking back to his car. He was in the street when Villa, 40, pulled a gun and shot him multiple times, striking him in the upper torso, Morales said.

Frank Hernandez, an 85-year-old Latino, died Wednesday, June 7, after being assaulted in the 300 block of East 220th Street in Carson, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Hernandez was walking in his neighborhood around 10 a.m. May 31, heading for a nearby liquor store to purchase lottery tickets, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Derrick Alfred said.
When he was about two blocks from his home, a man ran up behind Hernandez and struck him the head, Alfred said. When Hernandez fell, the man took his wallet.
The attacker then ran to a nearby home, where a man was standing outside the garage. The thief demanded money from that man before striking him in the face, Alfred said. He ran away when the man’s wife came outside.
