Delmus Eugene Wilkerson, a 71-year-old black man, died of suffocation Saturday, Aug. 27, in the 800 block of West 134th Street in Compton, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
Wilkerson lived in a shed on the property, which he was renting from the homeowner, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. John Corina.
Investigators believe Wilkerson was selling drugs from his residence and was killed when two men came inside his home early that morning and tried to rob him, Corina said.
Someone at the residence called 911 upon finding Wilkerson’s body, Corina said.
Wilkerson was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:43 a.m. The coroner’s office later ruled the death a homicide by asphyxiation.
Investigators believe someone put a plastic bag over Wilkerson's head during the robbery, Corina said.

Donta Gurrell Taylor, a 31-year-old black man, was shot and killed by Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies on Thursday, Aug. 25, near the concrete-lined wash basin by West Arbutus Street and North Kemp Avenue in Compton, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Deputies who had been chasing Taylor shot the man, said Lt. Steve Jauch. Taylor was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:30 p.m. with multiple gunshot wounds, according to coroner’s records.
Authorities said Taylor pointed a handgun at the deputies, but investigators have been unable to find a weapon, Jauch said.

Branden Marcel Davis, a 21-year-old black man, was shot and killed Monday, Aug. 1, in the 500 block of North Sloan Avenue in Compton, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department deputies went to Davis' home after receiving a 911 call about gunshots about 10:40 p.m.
Deputies found Davis lying in his driveway with multiple gunshot wounds, said Lt. Steve Jauch. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead at 11:10 p.m., according to coroner's records.
Investigators learned that a man confronted Davis in his frontyard and fired several shots at him, Jauch said.
"We have no suspect description other than he was a male," Jauch said.

Donnell Thompson Jr., a 27-year-old black man, was shot and killed by a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputy Thursday, July 28, in the 800 block of West Stockwell Street in Compton, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Initially, the department said Thompson was an armed carjacking suspect who had fired at deputies, but on Aug. 9, authorities said that the man had nothing to do with that crime or the assault on deputies.
“Knowing what we know now, do we wish it hadn’t happened? It speaks for itself,” said Capt. Steven Katz, head of the sheriff’s homicide bureau.
The incident began in the early hours of July 28, when a man used a gun to commandeer a 2012 gray Honda Civic at 48th Street and Crenshaw Boulevard in Los Angeles, Katz said.

Jeremiah Owings, a 42-year-old white man, was shot and killed on Thursday, July 21, in the 100 block of South Willow Avenue in Compton, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
The shooting occurred about 6:30 p.m., as Owings, a documented gang member, was hanging out with members of his gang in the rear parking lot of an apartment complex, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Mike Rosson.
Investigators believe several members of a rival gang walked up to the group and began shooting, Rosson said.
Owings was struck multiple times by gunfire. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:13 p.m., according to coroner’s records.

Ladaro Morrell Figures Jr., a 24-year-old black man, was shot and killed Saturday, July 9, in the 2700 block of West Lantana Street in Compton, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Figures and a friend were sitting in the front seats of his parked, four-door sedan when two men with guns walked up on either side of the vehicle around 1:14 p.m., said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Eddie Hernandez.
The car was parked on the street in front of a house belonging to the friend’s relative, with Figures behind the wheel and his friend in the passenger seat, Hernandez said.
Investigators don’t know if the men said anything before they pulled out their guns. “One suspect opened fire from the passenger’s side and the other from the driver’s side,” Hernandez said.

Antonio Lopez, a 31-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Wednesday, July 6, at the corner of North Santa Fe Avenue and East Pine Street in Compton, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Lopez was walking to a friend’s apartment about 8:44 p.m. when a man walked up behind him and shot him multiple times, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Sgt. Bill Cotter.
Witnesses provided few details about the shooter, describing him as black, male, “maybe in his 20s,” Cotter said. Investigators have little information about a motive.

Gonzalez was sitting in the driver’s seat of a parked car with two other friends about 11 p.m., said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. John Corina. The car was parked along the curb, and the three men were “just hanging out” in an area of commercial buildings and apartments, Corina said.

Parker was riding a bicycle in the residential neighborhood about 11:23 p.m. when a white SUV drove up beside him, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. John Corina.
Witnesses told investigators that Parker conversed with the people in the SUV for several minutes, before someone in the vehicle pulled out a gun, Corina said.

Ford was sitting on his front porch about 7:50 p.m. on Saturday, June 11, when he was shot multiple times, said Los Angeles County Sheriff's Sgt. Tim Cain.

Martin Mendiola, an 18-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Friday, May 27, in the 300 block of West Raymond Street in Compton, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
Mendiola was hanging out with a friend outside the friend's home about 10:50 p.m., when a man approached them on foot, said Los Angeles County Sheriff's Lt. Eddie Hernandez. After a brief conversation the man pulled out a gun and shot both men multiple times, Hernandez said.
Mendiola was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:53 p.m., according to coroner's records. His friend was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition and survived, Hernandez said.

Martin “Tito” Arias, a 26-year-old Latino, died Monday, May 23, after he was shot near East Rosecrans and North Bradfield avenues in Compton, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
About 8:45 p.m. on May 22, Arias, of San Bernardino, was at a small family gathering when a man was spotted breaking into a Toyota sedan, said Lt. Jose Mendoza with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
Arias went outside to confront the man, who ran north on Bradfield Avenue and across lanes of traffic onto East Rosecrans Avenue, Mendoza said.
The man reached the sidewalk, turned around and fired one round at Arias, striking him in the lower torso, Mendoza said.
