Hollis David Lainer, a 28-year-old black man, was shot and killed Tuesday, May 2, in the 1200 block of 141st Place in Gardena, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
About 7:20 p.m., Gardena police received a call about shots fired near an apartment complex. Once there, officers found three men suffering from gunshot wounds, according to a news release.
A Pontiac sedan was seen driving west on 141st Place where a group of people was standing on the steps of a condominium complex, detectives said. The driver of the vehicle began shooting toward the group before fleeing west toward Normandie Avenue.
Three men, including Lainer, suffered several gunshot wounds and were taken to a hospital. Lainer later died from his wounds. The other two men are expected to recover, according to the release.

Jimmy Bigges Jr., a 21-year-old black man, died Friday, Feb. 17, after he was shot by three Gardena police officers in two incidents, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records. Bigges used the name Jimmy Briggs Jr.
About 10:30 p.m. on Feb. 16, two Gardena Police Department patrol units noticed an argument in the parking lot of the Lucky Lady Casino in the 1000 block of West Rosecrans Boulevard, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Joe Mendoza.
A security guard was trying to calm the arguing men, so the officers pulled into the parking lot to offer assistance, Mendoza said.
The details of what happened next are sketchy, Mendoza said.

Andy Steven Portillo, a 25-year-old Latino, was shot to death Sunday, Sept. 25, in the 1900 block of 152nd Street in Gardena, according to the Los Angeles County coroner’s office.
About 12:30 a.m., Gardena police received a call about shots fired, said Lt. Russ Temple. Officers found Portillo lying in the street with multiple gunshot wounds, Temple said. He was pronounced dead at 1 a.m. at the scene, according to coroner’s records.
Temple said they do not have a suspect and are pursuing all leads.

Kellie Marie Nolan, a 27-year-old white woman, died Dec. 12, 2015, in the 16000 block of South Western Avenue in Gardena, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
About 1 a.m., Nolan and a man checked into a hotel. On a video detectives found at the scene, the coroner's report said, the pair engages in sexual activity involving Nolan being wrapped in tape and cellophane, with tape over her nose.
The man fell asleep while Nolan was still wrapped up and unable to breathe. When he awoke, Nolan was unresponsive. He unwrapped her and called 911 about 5 a.m.
Police and paramedics attempted life-saving measures, but Nolan was pronounced dead at 5:43 a.m., according to coroner’s records.

Lawrence Mitchell Weddle, a 41-year-old black man, was fatally shot Sept. 4, 2015, in the 2900 block of 141st Place in Gardena.
Police responded to a shooting call at an apartment complex about 7:50 p.m., according to a news release. Officers found Weddle in the courtyard of one of the apartment buildings with several gunshot wounds, the release said.
He was taken to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 8:23 p.m., according to coroner's records.
Police are pursing all leads to find a suspect, according to a police spokesman.
Patrick Oliver Cunningham, a 39-year-old black man, was shot and killed on Monday, July 6, in the 17000 block of Vermont Avenue in Gardena, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

When they arrived, officers found one gunshot victim who was conscious and then discovered another gunshot victim, later identified as Cunningham.

Sohyun Shin Kim, a 57-year-old Asian woman, was stabbed to death Sunday, April 19 in the 16400 block of Harvard Boulevard in Gardena, according to the Los Angeles County coroner’s office.
Kim called 911 about 8:30 a.m. and reported that her son was breaking into her apartment, according to a news release from the Gardena Police Department.
When officers arrived, they reportedly saw the victim’s son, Nicholas Hyunoh Kim, 29, leaving his mother’s apartment.

Jane Doe #72, a 55-year-old Asian woman, was fatally shot Wednesday, Nov. 23, in the 15800 block of South Normandie Avenue in Gardena, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
Police said Doe was discovered Wednesday evening lying in the front entrance to an upstairs apartment. She was taken to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, where she underwent surgery but later died.
Coroner's records show she died from a gunshot wound to the head.
A male, later identified as Won Chin, a 52-year-old Asian man, was also found just inside the apartment and died at the scene.
It's believed Chin shot Doe before committing suicide, said Larry Dietz of the Los Angeles County coroner’s office.
Dietz said that it was unclear how the two were related and that authorities were continuing to try to determine a motive.

Mun Jang, a 56-year-old Asian man, died Saturday, Oct. 1, a day after he was beaten in the 15000 block of South Western Avenue in Gardena, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
Ed Winter, spokesman for the coroner's office, said Jang was assaulted by several people Sept. 30.
The victim was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead the next day.
Winter had no other information about the case.
