Jaylen Ramon Bell-Maxwell, a 21-year-old black man, died Thursday, Dec. 21, after sustaining blunt force trauma in the 16500 block of South Western Avenue in Gardena, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
About noon, Bell-Maxwell was riding his motorcycle when he got into an argument with a driver of an Infiniti sedan, according to Garden Police Department news release. The dispute escalated when the pair collided in the roadway, causing both to veer into a storefront, police said.
Police responded to the scene, and Bell-Maxwell was transported to a hospital, where he died at 12:52 p.m., according to coroner’s records.
The sedan driver, Oscar Villa, 24, of Hawthorne, was arrested and charged with murder, according to prosecutors. Detectives said they could not determine what led to the argument.
Villa's arraignment hearing is scheduled for Jan. 31.

Demetrious Thomas, a 29-year-old black man, was fatally shot Wednesday, May 3, in the 2700 block of West 141st Street in Gardena, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
About 11:30 a.m., Gardena police received a call about shots fired in the area, according to a police news release. Upon arriving, officers found Thomas suffering from several gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:40 a.m., according to coroner’s records.
Detectives later discovered that Thomas was shot while in a nearby alley. Witnesses said they heard Thomas arguing with another man. The other man then opened fire on Thomas, police said.

Hollis David Lainer, a 28-year-old black man, was shot and killed Tuesday, May 2, in the 1200 block of 141st Place in Gardena, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
About 7:20 p.m., Gardena police received a call about shots fired near an apartment complex. Once there, officers found three men suffering from gunshot wounds, according to a news release.
A Pontiac sedan was seen driving west on 141st Place where a group of people was standing on the steps of a condominium complex, detectives said. The driver of the vehicle began shooting toward the group before fleeing west toward Normandie Avenue.
Three men, including Lainer, suffered several gunshot wounds and were taken to a hospital. Lainer later died from his wounds. The other two men are expected to recover, according to the release.

Jimmy Bigges Jr., a 21-year-old black man, died Friday, Feb. 17, after he was shot by three Gardena police officers in two incidents, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records. Bigges used the name Jimmy Briggs Jr.
About 10:30 p.m. on Feb. 16, two Gardena Police Department patrol units noticed an argument in the parking lot of the Lucky Lady Casino in the 1000 block of West Rosecrans Boulevard, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Joe Mendoza.
A security guard was trying to calm the arguing men, so the officers pulled into the parking lot to offer assistance, Mendoza said.

Andy Steven Portillo, a 25-year-old Latino, was shot to death Sunday, Sept. 25, in the 1900 block of 152nd Street in Gardena, according to the Los Angeles County coroner’s office.
About 12:30 a.m., Gardena police received a call about shots fired, said Lt. Russ Temple. Officers found Portillo lying in the street with multiple gunshot wounds, Temple said. He was pronounced dead at 1 a.m. at the scene, according to coroner’s records.

Kellie Marie Nolan, a 27-year-old white woman, died Dec. 12, 2015, in the 16000 block of South Western Avenue in Gardena, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
About 1 a.m., Nolan and a man checked into a hotel. On a video detectives found at the scene, the coroner's report said, the pair engages in sexual activity involving Nolan being wrapped in tape and cellophane, with tape over her nose.
The man fell asleep while Nolan was still wrapped up and unable to breathe. When he awoke, Nolan was unresponsive. He unwrapped her and called 911 about 5 a.m.
Police and paramedics attempted life-saving measures, but Nolan was pronounced dead at 5:43 a.m., according to coroner’s records.

Police responded to a shooting call at an apartment complex about 7:50 p.m., according to a news release. Officers found Weddle in the courtyard of one of the apartment buildings with several gunshot wounds, the release said.
