Jose Cumplido, a 35-year-old Latino, was shot and killed on Thursday, Feb. 2, in the 200 block of Nicobar Avenue in Lancaster, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Cumplido lived in an apartment with two other men in an industrial building that also houses a body shop, said L.A. County Sheriff’s Sgt. Robert Martindale. He had been living in the area for about three months and worked for the landlord in a landscaping business, Martindale said.
Early on Feb. 2, one of Cumplido’s roommates, Mario Jose Estrada, a 24-year-old mechanic for an aerospace company, called his brother and said he had killed Cumplido, Martindale said.
"He supposedly said something to the effect of, ‘I had to do it,’" Martindale said. “But we don’t know if that statement is self-serving or credible.”

Louis Dennard Campbell III, a 27-year-old black man, was shot and killed Tuesday, Nov. 1, in the 37300 block of 28th Street East in Lancaster, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Campbell, who lived in Lancaster, was found in a vacant house where people congregate to sleep, do drugs or hang out, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Mike Rosson.
Deputies were called to the scene about 8 p.m. by a homeless man who said he’d been in another part of the house listening to music on his phone with headphones, Rosson said.
When he walked into the living room, he told investigators he discovered Campbell lying on the floor with what looked like a blunt-force injury.
After paramedics moved Campbell, it became apparent he had been shot, Rosson said. Investigators found at least one bullet casing at the scene.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Sgt. Steven Craig Owen, a 53-year-old white man, was shot and killed Wednesday, Oct. 5, in the 3200 block of West Avenue J-7 in Lancaster, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Owen, a 29-year department veteran, had responded to a seemingly routine burglary call at an apartment building around 12:35 p.m.
Maria Azuela, 33, had called deputies to her home after a loud noise drew her downstairs, where she spotted a broken glass door.
She ran back upstairs to her bedroom where she waited with her 7-month-old baby. Moments later, she heard gunshots. From her bedroom window, Azuela saw a man lying motionless on his stomach. It was Owen.

Yves Calvin Stone, a 41-year-old black man, died Tuesday, Aug. 23, after he was shot in the 44000 block of Gingham Avenue in Lancaster, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Stone was a guest at the home where he was shot, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Sgt. Marc Boskovich.
About 11 p.m. Aug. 22, deputies were called about gunshots at a party at the house, Boskovich said.
Investigators found a trail of blood from the frontyard to the backyard, where Stone was lying on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds.
He was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:53 a.m., according to coroner’s records.
It’s unclear if Stone was shot in the frontyard and walked to the back or if the blood came from someone else, Boskovich said.

William Clay Settle, a 22-year-old black man, was shot and killed Saturday, Aug. 13, in the 1700 block of East Avenue J-4 in Lancaster, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies found Settle lying on a walkway outside some apartments about 1:30 a.m. after they received a call about gunshots in the area, said Lt. Steve Jauch.
Settle was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:35 a.m. with multiple gunshot wounds, according to coroner’s records.
Jauch said Settle lived in another part of Lancaster, and investigators don’t know why he was at the apartment complex or what he was doing prior to the shooting,
Nobody has reported seeing the shooting, Jauch said, and investigators have no description of the gunman.

Thomas Roland Gray Jr., a 29-year-old black man, died Saturday, June 18, two days after he was shot in the 1600 block of Cactus Drive in Lancaster, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Gray, a resident of Palmdale, was visiting a friend at his apartment on Thursday, June 16, when someone knocked at the door about 10 p.m., said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Mike Rosson.
When the friend answered the door, he told investigators he was hit over the head and remembered hearing a gunshot before he passed out, Rosson said.
When the friend came to, he discovered Gray had been shot and nearly $2,000 in cash and other items were gone from the apartment, Rosson said.

Aiden Matthew Lopez, a 5-month-old Latino, died Saturday, March 26, after he was beaten in the 43400 block of Gadsden Avenue in Lancaster, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
On March 22, the baby's parents left for work and left him in the care of a family friend who had been working as their babysitter for about eight weeks, said Los Angeles County Sheriff's Lt. Eddie Hernandez.
When the baby’s mother came home from work about 6 p.m., the babysitter asked her to come look at the boy and said, “I don’t think he’s breathing,” Hernandez said.
The mother grabbed her son and called 911, Hernandez said. The baby was taken to a hospital and treated for serious head trauma, bruising on his upper torso and a possible broken arm, Hernandez said.

Mark Curtis Magurean, a 57-year-old white man, died Wednesday, March 16, two months after he was struck in the head in the 300 block of East Avenue I in Lancaster, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
On Jan. 22, Magurean, a Lancaster resident, got into an argument with another Lancaster resident, Timony Munroe, 33, that escalated into a physical fight, according to a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department news release.
Magurean suffered a blunt-force injury to the head and was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead March 16, according to the release.
Munroe left the scene after the fight, but was arrested Jan. 27. He pleaded guilty to battery with great bodily injury, and was sentenced to seven years in state prison, according to the news release.
