Ruben Edward Gomez, a 20-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Monday, July 4, in the 13000 block of Elmcroft Avenue in Norwalk, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Gomez was standing with four friends in the street outside one of their homes about 11:29 p.m., when a dark-colored SUV drove up, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Sgt. Bill Cotter.
Someone shouted something from the SUV, Cotter said, and then two people inside the vehicle opened fire.
Gomez was shot and pronounced dead at the scene, according to coroner’s records. He lived within walking distance of where he died.
Two of Gomez’s friends were also hit by gunfire, one in the arm and the other in the leg, Cotter said. They were taken to nearby hospitals and are expected to survive.

Arnold Mendez, a 33-year-old Latino, died Monday, June 20, after he was shot in the 14000 block of Claressa Avenue in Norwalk, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
Mendez was shot June 18 about 11:30 p.m. while walking north from his home on Claressa Avenue, said Los Angeles County Sheriff's Lt. Eddie Hernandez.
As Mendez was walking, a dark-colored, four-door vehicle drove up from behind, Hernandez said. Investigators believe there were several Latinos in the car and at least two of them opened fire on Mendez, Hernandez said.
An ambulance took Mendez to St. Francis Medical Center with a gunshot wound to the head. He was pronounced dead at 4:24 p.m. two days later, according to coroner's records
Hernandez said investigators believe the shooting is gang-related.

Francisco Garcia, a 26-year-old Latino, was shot and killed by a Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy Wednesday, Feb. 24, at the corner of Alondra Boulevard and Studebaker Road in Norwalk, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Garcia was in an Acura Integra at a gas pump outside a 7-Eleven when a deputy noticed the car had been reported stolen from Whittier earlier in the day, Lt. Eddie Hernandez said.
Deputies were doing extra patrols and checking vehicle license plates in the area because of the fatal shooting of 18-year-old Christopher Bishop as he was shopping at a convenience store the day before, Hernandez said.
The deputy pulled into the station shortly after 5 p.m., parked behind the Integra and went up to talk to Garcia, who was standing outside the car at the pump, Hernandez said.

Christopher Bishop, an 18-year-old Latino, died Tuesday, Feb. 23, after he was shot in the 10900 block of Alondra Boulevard in Norwalk, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Bishop and his father were shopping inside a 7-Eleven store about 4:35 p.m. when he was confronted by a group of young men, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Victor Lewandowski.
“We believe they were gang members,” Lewandowski said of the men.
Bishop ran out of the store and was chased by the men, one of whom pulled a gun and shot him multiple times in the parking lot, Lewandowski said.
The gunman ran from the scene, Lewandowski said, and witnesses also reported seeing a white Lexus leaving the scene.

John Anthony Gonzalez, an 18-year-old Latino, was killed by Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies Dec. 1 in the 12600 block of Pioneer Boulevard in Norwalk, according to Los Angeles County coroner records.
The incident began about 6:30 p.m. when members of the sheriff's gang unit stopped two men walking north on Pioneer Boulevard near Imperial Highway, Lt. Victor Lewandowski said.
"Their gait was such that they [the deputies] could tell they were carrying something in their waistbands," Lewandowski said.
When the detectives got closer, Lewandowski said, they could see one of the men trying to drop a handgun. The deputies tried to stop them, but one man, later identified as Gonzalez, allegedly pointed his gun at the deputies, and the deputies opened fire.
Gonzalez was struck and pronounced dead at the scene at 6:46 p.m., according to coroner's records. ...
Eric Hector Sarabia, a 36-year-old Latino, was found dead from gunshot wounds Tuesday, Nov. 24, in the 13900 block of Flatbush Avenue in Norwalk, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Deputies were called to the scene about 3:50 p.m. after a passerby noticed a man slumped inside a white van, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Steve Jauch.
The man, later identified as Sarabia, was sitting in the rear seat with trauma to his face and head, Jauch said.
Investigators later determined that Sarabia had been shot in the face, Jauch said. He was pronounced dead at 3:51 p.m., according to coroner’s records, but investigators don’t know when he was a shot, Jauch said.

Julian Fidel Chavez, a 26-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Thursday, Oct. 15, in the 14800 block of Dartmoor Avenue in Norwalk, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
About 9:15 p.m., neighbors heard an argument, then the sound of gunshots, said Lt. Holly Francisco with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
Deputies responded and found Chavez and another man suffering from gunshot wounds. It’s unclear what the initial argument was over, Francisco said. Deputies believed an assailant fled on foot.
Both of the men were taken to a hospital. Chavez was pronounced dead at 10:05 p.m., according to coroner’s records. The other man is expected to survive.
The next morning, Raul Herrera Jr., a 23-year-old Latino, turned himself in at the Norwalk Sheriff’s Station, Francisco said.

Luis Humberto Virgen Jr., a 21-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Wednesday, Sept. 23, as he was walking in the 15100 block of Grayland Avenue in Norwalk, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department homicide investigators.
Virgen and a female friend were walking south on Grayland Avenue, through the parking lot of an elementary school, when a white vehicle drove up beside them about 10:34 p.m., said Lt. Steve Jauch with the sheriff's department.
Two Latino adults got out of the car and started shooting at the couple, Jauch said. He said he couldn’t comment on whether the shooters said anything before they began firing.
