Nancy Molina, a 33-year-old Latina, died Monday, July 4, after she was beaten and strangled in the 5200 block of Brookdale Road in South Gate, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
South Gate police were called about 4:20 a.m., after Molina’s boyfriend, Oscar Rodriguez Jr., called 911 and said his girlfriend was having difficulty breathing, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. John Corina.
Officers discovered that Molina had multiple traumatic injuries, Corina said. Paramedics performed CPR on Molina and then took her to a nearby hospital.
Rodriguez allegedly told investigators that the couple had been drinking and that Molina had fallen, Corina said. However, doctors at the hospital told investigators that her injuries seemed too severe for a fall.
Molina was pronounced dead at the hospital at 9:15 p.m., according to coroner’s records. The cause of death was listed ...
Joseph Carlos Barela, a 33-year-old Latino, was shot and killed on Sunday, July 4, on the dirt path beside the Los Angeles River, west of the 710 Freeway and north of Firestone Boulevard in Bell Gardens, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Barela, a homeless man, was riding his bicycle to visit some friends when a man with a gun approached him and opened fire about 6:26 p.m., said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. John Corina.
Investigators believe reports that the gunman ran from the scene, Corina said, heading south along the path on foot.
Barela was pronounced dead at the scene from gunshot wounds at 6:30 p.m., according to coroner’s records.
The gunman is described only as a Latino adult wearing dark clothing, Corina said.

Marco Antonio Franco, a 25-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Wednesday, June 29, in the 4900 block of Mason Street in South Gate, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Franco had accompanied his friend Enrique Valverde, 22, to a body shop about 5:45 p.m. to pick up some car parts, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Eddie Hernandez.
Valverde was unhappy because the shop had not completed some work on his car on time, and he wanted some parts he said he had paid for, Hernandez said. He and Franco met with the shop owner and got into an argument that escalated to a fight, Hernandez said.
During the fight, Valverde and Franco pulled out knives, Hernandez said.
