Carnell Snell Jr., an 18-year-old black man, was fatally shot by Los Angeles Police on Saturday, Oct. 1, in the 1700 block of West 107th Street in Westmont, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
About 1 p.m., officers were working near South Western Avenue and 108th Street when they spotted a light blue Nissan with paper plates. The plates didn’t match the year of the car, causing officers to think it may have been stolen, LAPD Chief Charlie Beck told reporters Monday.
As officers watched the car, Snell, sitting in the back seat, looked toward them, then ducked “as if to hide from them,” Beck said.
He said officers started to follow the car, which slowed. As officers activated their lights and sirens, he said, the car slowed more and Snell got out “holding his waistband as if he was supporting something.”

Lester Scott Virgil, a 45-year-old black man, was fatally shot Friday, Aug. 5, in the 1600 block of West 110th Street, in Westmont, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Virgil, an operations supervisor at Los Angeles International Airport, was at a friend's house about 5:44 p.m. watching his son do basketball drills. That's when a car pulled up, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. John Corina said, and a black man in his 20s wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt got out of the passenger seat and began shooting. Children and adults went running, and the gunman got back in the car, which was driven away.

Adan Cabrera, a 32-year-old Latino, died Sunday, July 24, after he was shot in the 9400 block of Normandie Avenue in Westmont, according to authorities.
Cabrera was inside his apartment about 10:40 p.m. on July 23 when he was shot at his front door, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Steve Jauch.
When deputies arrived, Cabrera was in the living room with multiple gunshot wounds, Jauch said. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead the following day at 2:55 a.m., according to coroner’s records.
Investigators don’t have information about suspects or motive, Jauch said. Cabrera lives in the apartment with roommates, and some were home at the time, he said, “but no information has been provided right now that helps.”

Mark Le Roy Tyree Jr., a 15-year-old black youth, was shot and killed Sunday, June 26, in the 1300 block of West 92nd Street in the Westmont neighborhood of South Los Angeles, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Tyree was a high school student who lived a few streets away from the shooting scene, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. John Corina.
He was hanging out with a 14-year-old friend in the driveway of his friend’s home about 8:26 p.m. when a dark-colored sedan drove by, Corina said.
At least one person in the car opened fire, striking Tyree multiple times, Corina said. His friend was not injured.
Tyree was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead at 9:07 p.m. with gunshot wounds to the arm and chest, according to coroner’s records.
Jhonathan “Poppy” Jasean Oliver, a 32-year-old black man, was shot and killed Tuesday, June 21, in the 1400 bock of West 102nd Street in the Westmont neighborhood of South Los Angeles, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Oliver, a graduate of Van Nuys High School and former wild lands firefighter, had recently returned to Los Angeles to help his 91-year-old grandfather, who had lived in the neighborhood for more than 50 years, said Camille Hubbard, the mother of their two sons, ages 4 and 5.
Hubbard said she and their sons flew in from Chicago and arrived at 8 p.m. at the house where Oliver was staying with his grandfather. The family walked to a nearby Taco Bell, she said, but when they brought it home they realized they hadn’t gotten anything for the kids to drink.

Raivon Robinson, a 19-year-old black man, died Tuesday, June 21, after he was shot in the 1200 block of West 90th Street in the Westmont neighborhood of South Los Angeles, according to Los Angeles County coroner records.
Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputies were called about a gunshot victim lying on a porch about 10:50 p.m. on Sunday, June 19, Lt. Steve Jauch said.
Robinson was taken to Harbor UCLA Medical Center by ambulance, where he was pronounced dead two days later at 9 a.m., according to coroner’s records. Jauch said Robinson had been shot in the head.
Homicide investigators weren’t called until after Robinson died, Jauch said.
“We have no witness information, no suspect information, and we don’t know exactly how he was killed, other than he was found on a front porch,” Jauch said.

Derrick Deon Hicks, a 25-year-old black man, died on Thursday, April 21, after he was shot at the corner of 89th Street and Budlong Avenue in the Westmont area of South Los Angeles, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Witnesses told investigators that Hicks and another man were standing on the sidewalk talking at 6:53 p.m., when the other man pulled a gun and shot Hicks multiple times, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Joe Mendoza said.
Hicks fell to the ground and was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 7:28 p.m., according to coroner’s records.
Mendoza said Hicks lived just down the street from where he was shot. “It was his neighborhood, and he was just hanging out,” he said.

Ruben Mendoza, a 42-year-old Latino, died Saturday, Nov. 14, after he was shot in the 11400 block of Berendo Avenue in Westmont, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
Mendoza was standing in the alley outside his house, talking to two other Latinos about 7:40 p.m. when the men started arguing, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Lt. Steve Jauch said.
One of the men pulled out a gun and shot Mendoza, Jauch said, and then the two men fled.
Mendoza was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:09 p.m., according to coroner's records.
Jauch said investigators don't have a description of the men and still are trying to determine why Mendoza was talking to them.

Rolando Estrada, a 26-year-old Latino, was fatally shot Saturday Nov. 7 in the 1000 block of West 92nd Street in Westmont, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Shortly before 9:40 p.m., Estrada was standing in an apartment complex driveway with a group of people when a gunman walked up and shot into the crowd, wounding Estrada and another man. A survivor ran to a nearby apartment to contact call authorities, said Lt. Dave Coleman of the L.A. County Sheriff's Department.
Estrada and the other man were taken to a hospital. Estrada was pronounced dead at 9:55 p.m., and the other man is expected to survive.
