Jose George Anthony Franco, a 37-year-old Latino, was shot and killed by police officers on Wednesday, Nov. 16, in the 13400 block of Penn Street in Whittier, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Whittier police officers were called to the scene around 6 a.m. after someone called the department reporting "a suspicious man walking westbound on Penn Street, possibly holding a machete," according to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Steve Jauch.
When the officers tried to talk to Franco, he ignored their commands to drop the machete and picked up a tree branch and threw it at one of them, Jauch said.
The branch missed, Jauch said, but then Franco lunged at another officer, and two officers opened fire.

Carlos Francisco Mendez, a 45-year-old Latino, was killed by police officers Tuesday, Nov. 8, in the 500 block of West 4th Street in Azusa, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Mendez, a street maintenance worker for the city of Garden Grove, walked out of his home with an assault rifle about 2:25 p.m. and began shooting at whomever he saw, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. John Corina.
He first shot at passing cars, hitting a woman who was driving a van, Corina said. The woman was struck in the head, he said, and her van crashed moments later.
His next victim was his next-door neighbor, Francis William Varney, 77, who was shot when he walked out of his house, apparently to investigate the commotion, Corina said.

Michelle Lee Shirley, a 39-year-old black woman, was shot to death by a Torrance police officer Monday, Oct. 31, near the intersection of Sepulveda Boulevard and Cabrillo Avenue in Torrance, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
About 2:28 p.m., Torrance officers received a multiple calls about a reckless driver, according to a news release. Callers said a Ford Fusion,had collision damage and that the side airbags had deployed, the release said.
Once police spotted the car, officers boxed it in, according the news release. As the driver tried to get away, officers opened fire on the car, striking the driver, who was later identified as Shirley, the release said.
Shirley, of San Diego, was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead at 3:05 p.m., according to coroner's records.

Daniel Enrique Perez, a 16-year-old Latino, was shot to death by Los Angeles police officers Sunday, Oct. 2, near East 48th Street and Ascot Avenue in Central-Alameda, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Shortly before 5 p.m., officers went to the area after a person reported a man with a gun, said Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck. The officers spotted someone matching the description — a Latino man with a gray sweater and black pants — and began to approach him, Beck said.
That person, identified as Perez, then turned and pointed a handgun at the officers, Beck said, prompting police to open fire.
Paramedics took Perez to a hospital, where he died later that evening.

Carnell Snell Jr., an 18-year-old black man, was fatally shot by Los Angeles Police on Saturday, Oct. 1, in the 1700 block of West 107th Street in Westmont, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
About 1 p.m., officers were working near South Western Avenue and 108th Street when they spotted a light blue Nissan with paper plates. The plates didn’t match the year of the car, causing officers to think it may have been stolen, LAPD Chief Charlie Beck told reporters Monday.
As officers watched the car, Snell, sitting in the back seat, looked toward them, then ducked “as if to hide from them,” Beck said.

Jose Romero, a 39-year-old Latino, was shot and killed by police on Sunday, Sept. 4, in the 1600 block of Obispo Avenue in Long Beach, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
The incident began about 9:15 p.m. when police received a call from a man who said he was armed with a handgun and wanted to commit "suicide by cop," according to a statement from the Long Beach Police Department.
Police used a helicopter to find the man in the area, and officers determined he had "something in his hands," police said.
Police officers, including a mental-evaluation officer, were adjusting their position to better negotiate with the man about 10:15 p.m. when the man "charged at officers," the police statement said.

Joshua Quintero, a 23-year-old Latino, was shot and killed by a Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy on Thursday, Sept. 1, in an alley west of Beach Street, between East 83rd and East 84th streets, in Florence-Firestone, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Sheriff’s deputies were called about 5:48 p.m. regarding a gunshot victim, said Lt. Mike Rosson. Two deputies arrived within about 30 seconds and found a black man who had been shot in the abdomen, he said.
The gunshot victim was conscious but unwilling to talk to deputies about what happened, Rosson said.

Donta Gurrell Taylor, a 31-year-old black man, was shot and killed by Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies on Thursday, Aug. 25, near the concrete-lined wash basin by West Arbutus Street and North Kemp Avenue in Compton, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Deputies who had been chasing Taylor shot the man, said Lt. Steve Jauch. Taylor was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:30 p.m. with multiple gunshot wounds, according to coroner’s records.

Officers assigned to the LAPD’s Hollywood Division were driving along North Hobart Boulevard, just south of Sunset Boulevard about 1 a.m. when they encountered a man with a “bayonet-style” weapon, said Lt. Chris Ramirez.
Ramirez described the weapon as a “long piece of metal” with a bayonet more than 6 inches long fixed to the end, but he said investigators were still examining the object. Police had initially described the weapon as a long firearm with a knife attached to the end.

Kenney Watkins, an 18-year-old black man, was shot and killed by a Los Angeles police officer Tuesday, Aug. 16, in the 400 block of West Century Boulevard in Vermont Vista, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
About 3:30 p.m., an officer on a motorcycle stopped a dark sedan in the area, Los Angeles Police Lt. Chris Ramirez said. During the traffic stop, Watkins, who was in the passenger seat, got out.
The officer told investigators he fired at Watkins because he saw Watkins start to turn toward him with a gun, said Det. Meghan Aguilar, an LAPD spokeswoman.
