Michael Dwaine Rogers, a 32-year-old white man, was fatally shot by Los Angeles police Tuesday, Jan. 10, in the 1100 block of South Hope Street downtown, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Shortly before 5 p.m., a security guard saw Rogers, armed with a kitchen knife, try to carjack an L.A. City Department of Transportation officer, but the officer was able to fend him off, police said.
The transportation officer waved down two LAPD traffic officers, who confronted Rogers on South Hope Street between 11th and 12th streets.
Rogers lunged at the driver’s side of the police cruiser with the knife, police said. The officer at the wheel sped forward and made a U-turn, but Rogers entered a nearby exercise studio, frightening customers who scrambled to get away. Rogers then exited the business and was confronted by officers.

Ruben Lamont Randolph, a 51-year-old black man, was shot and killed by police officers on Wednesday, Jan. 4, in the 900 block of North San Antonio Avenue in Pomona, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Pomona Police officers were called to the area of North San Antonio Avenue and East Columbia Avenue about 7 p.m. regarding a man who was shooting into an apartment, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Steve Jauch.
Officers saw a man, later identified as Randolph, walking in the middle of the block, holding a handgun, said Jauch. The officers and Randolph exchanged gunfire, Jauch said, and then Randolph ran into the alley behind the apartment building.
The officers followed him, and three officers shot again, Jauch said, this time striking Randolph, who was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:22 p.m.

Zhonghua Li, a 48-year-old Chinese man, died on Saturday, Dec. 24, after he was shot by deputies in the 3400 block of Greenglade Avenue in Pico Rivera, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Deputies were called to Li's residence about 4:45 p.m., according to L.A. County Sheriff’s Lt. Steve Jauch.
Family members had called 911 to report that Li had a history of mental illness and was arguing with family members and attacking them with a sharp object, Jauch said.
Li stabbed one of his family members in the hand, Jauch said, but the victim refused treatment. Others in the house included Li’s father, sister and brother-in-law, he said.

Jose Luis Sanchez, a 30-year-old Latino, died on Friday, Dec. 23, after he was shot by police officers at the intersection of Esto Avenue and Fieldcrest Street in El Monte, according to Los Angeles County authorities.
Sanchez, who lived in San Bernardino, was driving a mid-sized SUV about 9:35 p.m. when El Monte police officers tried to stop him for a drunken driving investigation near the intersection of Valley Boulevard and Tyler Avenue, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Steve Jauch.
When Sanchez refused to stop, officers gave chase, pursuing him for nearly two miles, to Esto Avenue and Fieldcrest Street, Jauch said. Officers laid down spiked strips to try to stop Sanchez, but "they had no effect," Jauch said.
During the pursuit, Sanchez’s SUV collided with another vehicle at Arden Drive and Valley Boulevard, Jauch said.

Ryan Devaughn Joseph, a 20-year-old black man, was fatally shot by Los Angeles police on Sunday, Dec. 18, in the 6000 block of South Western Avenue in Harvard Park, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
About 8:25 p.m., officers from the Los Angeles Police Department's Metro Division observed a man who held his hands near his waistband and who was believed to be carrying a weapon, said Lt. Chris Ramirez with the LAPD.
When officers approached, the man — later identified as Joseph by the coroner's office — fled and ran through an apartment building before turning north on Western toward 60th Street.
At that point, at least one officer opened fire, striking Joseph, Ramirez said.

Fidel Jimmy Barrios, a 33-year-old Latino, died on Saturday, Dec. 17, after he was shot by deputies in the 900 block of La Verne Avenue in East Los Angeles, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies were called to Barrios’ residence about 1:05 a.m. after receiving a 911 call about a gunshot victim, said Lt. Steve Jauch.
Deputies entered the duplex where Barrios lived after people who had gathered outside told deputies that someone inside had been shot, Jauch said.
Deputies found Barrios sitting in a chair in his bedroom, bleeding from the face, Jauch said.
A shotgun was at Barrios’ feet, Jauch said.
“The deputies told him not to move, but he reached for the gun and that’s when the shooting occurred," Jauch said.

Robert James Hess, a 60-year-old white man, died Thursday, Dec. 15, after he was shot by sheriff’s deputies in the 15600 block of Windrush Drive in Hacienda Heights, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Hess had been with relatives in Downey that afternoon discussing family financial matters, when he became upset and began making threats, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Joe Mendoza.
Downey police officers went to the 7300 block of Hannon Street about 1 p.m. after receiving a 911 call saying that Hess was threatening family members with a knife and a gun, Mendoza said.
When officers arrived, Hess was driving away from the house on his motorcycle, Mendoza said. He allegedly evaded officers when they tried to stop him, and the officers gave chase, following Hess onto the southbound 5 Freeway.

Pablo Renato Cartagena, a 23-year-old Latino, was fatally shot by Los Angeles police officers Monday, Nov. 28, in the 2700 block of Maple Avenue in Historic South-Central, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
About 1 p.m., officers with the Los Angeles Police Department’s Metropolitan Division were driving near East 27th Street and Maple Avenue when they spotted a man who they “believed was about to burglarize a vehicle,” said LAPD Det. Meghan Aguilar.
The officers stopped to investigate, Aguilar said, and the man, later identified as Cartagena, ran.
The officers chased him to the back of a nearby home, where one officer shot him.
Cartagena was pronounced dead at 1:14 p.m. at the scene, according to coroner’s records.

Jose George Anthony Franco, a 37-year-old Latino, was shot and killed by police officers on Wednesday, Nov. 16, in the 13400 block of Penn Street in Whittier, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Whittier police officers were called to the scene around 6 a.m. after someone called the department reporting "a suspicious man walking westbound on Penn Street, possibly holding a machete," according to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Steve Jauch.
When the officers tried to talk to Franco, he ignored their commands to drop the machete and picked up a tree branch and threw it at one of them, Jauch said.
The branch missed, Jauch said, but then Franco lunged at another officer, and two officers opened fire.

Carlos Francisco Mendez, a 45-year-old Latino, was killed by police officers Tuesday, Nov. 8, in the 500 block of West 4th Street in Azusa, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Mendez, a street maintenance worker for the city of Garden Grove, walked out of his home with an assault rifle about 2:25 p.m. and began shooting at whomever he saw, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. John Corina.
He first shot at passing cars, hitting a woman who was driving a van, Corina said. The woman was struck in the head, he said, and her van crashed moments later.
His next victim was his next-door neighbor, Francis William Varney, 77, who was shot when he walked out of his house, apparently to investigate the commotion, Corina said.

Michelle Lee Shirley, a 39-year-old black woman, was shot to death by a Torrance police officer Monday, Oct. 31, near the intersection of Sepulveda Boulevard and Cabrillo Avenue in Torrance, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
About 2:28 p.m., Torrance officers received a multiple calls about a reckless driver, according to a news release. Callers said a Ford Fusion,had collision damage and that the side airbags had deployed, the release said.
Once police spotted the car, officers boxed it in, according the news release. As the driver tried to get away, officers opened fire on the car, striking the driver, who was later identified as Shirley, the release said.

Daniel Enrique Perez, a 16-year-old Latino, was shot to death by Los Angeles police officers Sunday, Oct. 2, near East 48th Street and Ascot Avenue in Central-Alameda, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Shortly before 5 p.m., officers went to the area after a person reported a man with a gun, said Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck. The officers spotted someone matching the description — a Latino man with a gray sweater and black pants — and began to approach him, Beck said.
That person, identified as Perez, then turned and pointed a handgun at the officers, Beck said, prompting police to open fire.
Paramedics took Perez to a hospital, where he died later that evening.
