Man sentenced in fatal stabbing at Monterey Park pizza parlor

A man was sentenced Thursday to 16 years to life in state prison for fatally stabbing another man in a Monterey Park pizza parlor, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.

On July 7, a jury found Jose De Jesus Ruiz guilty of second-degree murder for killing Patrick Raymond Ortega, 25.

On Oct. 6, 2012, Ruiz attended a youth football game in Bell Gardens before going to a pizza parlor in Monterey Park. A group of fans of a rival team were at the restaurant as well.

At the restaurant in the 1900 block of South Atlantic Boulevard, an argument escalated into a physical fight. During the fight, Ruiz stabbed Ortega.

Soon after the incident, Los Angeles Conty sheriff’s deputies arrested Ruiz.
