Compton gang member sentenced for fatal drive-by shooting

A Compton gang member was sentenced May 10 to 80 years to life in prison for killing a man and shooting at a rival gang member in 2014, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.

A jury found Michael Angelo Daniel, 37, guilty of first-degree murder in the killing of David Jerome Scott, 31, as well as on count of attempted murder. Jurors found true a special allegation that the killing was committed for the benefit of a gang. In addition, gun allegations were found true.

On May 21, prosecutors said, Scott and another man were standing outside of a house when they were shot at from a passing car.

After police arrived, Scott was taken to a hospital where he later died. The other man survived.

Witnesses at the scene helped police identity the gunman’s vehicle. Soon after, L.A. County sheriff's deputies located the vehicle and arrested Daniel. According to evidence presented at trial, authorities found bullet casings in the car that linked the Daniel to the shooting.
