Alex Antonio Melendez, 28

Alex Antonio Melendez, a 28-year-old Latino, died Thursday, March 24, after he was shot in the 1200 block of Menlo Avenue in Pico-Union, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

About 10:30 p.m., Melendez drove to the area in a gray pickup, with others following him in a red pickup, said Los Angeles police Det. Steve Katz. When the group got to the area, there was a confrontation and Melendez was shot, Katz said.

Melendez was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 5:40 a.m. on March 24, according to coroner’s records.

Police are trying to determine whether the shooting suspect was defending himself and his group. Katz said the man has been interviewed and is cooperating with police. The case is still under investigation.
