A story for every victim

Amanda Nicole Lopez, 27

Amanda Nicole Lopez, a 27-year-old Latina, died Sunday, April 22, after being shot in the 4800 block of Civic Center Way in East Los Angeles, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Lopez was sleeping in a tent outside the East Los Angeles Civic Center when someone shot her around 2:32 a.m., Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Rodney Moore said.

Lopez was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:45 a.m., according to coroner’s records.

“We don’t believe it was random,” said Moore, who couldn’t provide a motive or a description of the shooter. “We believe she was targeted.”

In a brief obituary,  Lopez was described as one of seven siblings and the mother of a 4-year-old son “who will miss his mommy dearly.”

Her family has set up an online fundraiser to help with expenses.

Sgt. Marcelo Quintero said Lopez had been living in the tent where she was shot. "She was trying, but was still under the grips of substance abuse," he said.
