A story for every victim

Andy Hernandez, 16 [Updated]

Andy Hernandez, a 16-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Thursday, Dec. 2, in the 100 block of East 73rd Street in Florence, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Ed Winter, spokesman for the coroner's office, said someone stepped out of a car about 10:07 p.m. and shot Hernandez and two other people.

Paramedics were called, and the three victims were taken to a hospital where Hernandez was pronounced dead 30 minutes later. According to corner's records, he was shot several times in the shoulder and back.

Winter said he did not know the status of the two other victims.

The Times has contacted investigators for additional information about the shooting and will post an update as soon as possible.

[Update Dec. 8: LAPD Criminal Gang & Homicide Det. Chris Balling said the shooter shot Hernandez and one other person, not two people as earlier reported by the coroner. The second victim was taken to the hospital for a superficial wound and was later released, he said.

Witnesses described the assailant as a black man in his 20s. He was last seen fleeing the area in a dark sedan.

The shooter is believed to be a gang member, Balling said, and the incident is considered to be gang-related.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact Dets. Chris Valento or Dean Vinluan at (213) 485-1383. Those wishing to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS (800-222-8477).]
