Atilio S. Benavides-Amaya, a 39-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2013, in the 1300 block of South Union Avenue in Pico-Union, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Benavides-Amaya had just gotten off work and was walking home about 8:15 p.m. to the apartment he shared with his mother when two men walked up to him, LAPD Det. Reynaldo Martinez said.

Benavides-Amaya was shot multiple times at close range, then the two men ran east on Union Avenue and may have gotten into a dark SUV.

Benavides-Amaya was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:30 p.m., according to coroner’s records.

I agree with "FullyAware" in at least one aspect, these are most certainly different times we live in. I'm an old gal, and I remember a time when gang members had a throw-down, and as viscious as these street fights were, most lived to see another day. Now, banging means certain death or risk by gunshot assault to settle disputes over territory, drugs, prostitution or whatever else the gangs are into. It's sad to see that most people don't put any value on a human life. Especially kids. They don't think about falling in love, raising a family, traveling, being grand-parents, owning a home, or anything that would most likely be in their future. They don't think about what it means to take someone's future away from them or how the loss will effect the family, and parents of the person they just killed. That tells me that many gang bangers don't think of the future or of them having any worthwhile future. It hits me the hardest to see so many young people with this mindset. Have we left such a troubling legacy for our younger generation?
Humanity is so lost, and it's going to take a miracle for us to be on the right track again. Just my two 1/4 cents.
