Augustine Calderon, 23 [Updated]

Augustine Calderon, a 23-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Sunday, Oct. 10, in the 7000 block of South Broadway in Florence, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Ed Winter, spokesman for the coroner's office, said Calderon got into an altercation with another person at a bar at about 12:25 a.m. The two went outside, and Calderon was shot several times by the assailant.

Authorities were called, and Calderon was taken to a hospital, where he died at 1:28 a.m., Winter said.

He said he did not know if police made an arrest in the case.

The Times has contacted investigators for more information about the shooting and will provide an update as soon as details become available.

[Updated Oct. 26: LAPD Newton Detective L. McKenzie, who is handling the case, said Calderon never entered the bar. He was walking towards the establishment when he got in the fight and was subsequently shot.

No arrests have been made in connection with Calderon's death, McKenzie said, and it's unknown if the assault was gang-related.

Witnesses to the shooting described the assailant a Latino in his early twenties wearing a white T-shirt and black pants.

Anyone with information about the incident or the identity of the shooter is asked to contact Det. McKenzie at (323) 846-6556. Tipsters who would like to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS (800-222-8477).]
