A story for every victim

Bennie Jean Porter, 53

Bennie Jean Porter, a 53-year-old black woman, died Saturday, Aug. 2, after being shot in the 1000 block of East Lexington Avenue in Pomona, according to coroner’s records.

Porter and her brother-in-law, Lafferal Alexander, 59, were sitting on a porch about 11:45 p.m. when a gunman or gunmen walked up to the front of the home and began shooting. It is unknown whether there were multiple shooters.

Porter was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 12:25 a.m. Lafferal died at the scene.

The siblings were not robbed, and police are looking for a motive.

“We don’t have any idea who shot them,” said police Lt. Ronald McDonald. “It’s not believed to be gang related.”

Police are offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the conviction of the person or persons responsible.

Detectives urged anyone with knowledge of the shooting to call the Pomona police tip line at (909) 620-2085 or Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.
