Brian Alexis Barbosa, 23

Brian Alexis Barbosa, a 23-year-old Latino, was shot and killed by South Gate Police Department officers on Jan. 11 in the 8900 block of Kauffman Avenue in South Gate, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Shortly before 4 a.m., a man unsuccessfully tried to carjack a driver at a Jack in the Box restaurant in the 8900 block of Atlantic Avenue, according to a news release from the Sheriff’s Department, which is assisting in the investigation.

While South Gate Police officers were with the driver targeted in the attempted carjacking, Barbosa, later identified as the suspect, was seen by the driver and the officers.

Barbosa then ran from the police and allegedly attempted another carjacking on nearby Annetta Avenue, according to the news release. After Barbosa failed, he ran into residential yards in the area.

As police searched for Barbosa, they spotted him on the sidewalk in the 8900 block of Kauffman Avenue “armed with a handgun,” according to the news release.

Barbosa “confronted” the officers and “an officer-involved shooting” occurred.

Barbosa was pronounced dead at the scene and a gun was recovered.
