Carl Washington, 44 [Updated]

Carl Washington, a 44-year-old black man, was shot and killed Sunday, July 18, in the 19600 block of Harlan Avenue in Carson, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

The shooting occurred about 4:00 a.m. in front of Washington's home, said sheriff's homicide Detective Robert Kenney, who is handling the investigation.

Witnesses reported seeing suspects flee the scene, heading north on Harlan in a white sport-utility vehicle, he said.

Washington was taken to a hospital, where he died. Authorities said the incident appeared to be gang-related.

wow.....I have been reading all of the things people have said about Carl...some of them were nice and some not so nice......that man wouldnt hurt a flea, he was one of the most sweetest men I know......he treated me like a queen , and he knew how to treat a person period. Im so sorry to say he was not in a committed relationship and whoever this Daphne person was, was either someone in his pass or in his present like all of his other friends....I know this for a fact but he's gone now and we just need to hold his memories close to our hearts......I will never forget how we use to go out and eat just about every weekend and sometimes after we got off from work and enjoy laughs and good times together....he was my heart and that is where he will always stay........I have spent a lot of time with Carl, I had the pleasure of spending Valentine's weekend with him and we had the best time ever, another good human being gone too soon......I will always have love in my heart for Carl.......

I didn't know Mr. Carl Washington but to his family and friends I offer my condolences for your lost. I’m also writing to say that there are a lot of sick, evil and hateful morons who read the Homicide Report and feel compelled to spew their venom instead of feeling compassion for the loved ones of the deceased. Carson Resident and especially the crazed syscom3 are prime examples, they like to stereotype and blame. When I first read the report I assumed Mr. Washington may have been out to a club or a party and was arriving home at 4 am; as Americans are we not entitled to come and go as we like? Yet you parasites and the "ebonic writer" who thinks he is clever (trust me you aren't) assume ill intent and feel vindicated because one so-called friend said he used to be in a gang. You don’t even know if that is true yet you run with it. All you hate mongers should be aware that Karma is a funny thing and just as you are going along thinking all is swell your bitterness and evil ways catch up with you. This page was meant for family and friends to communicate their grief and vent their outrage over senseless killings. Yet you children of satan use it to express your hate. I wonder what people will write about you when you die? I’m guessing good riddance!

I know people want to paint the picture of what they saw in Carl and what they thought they knew about him and that is fine, but beleive me when I say, he was not in a committed relationship, he was free to have friends and enjoy the company of his choice, no matter what it may have looked like ......just know that each and everyone that had the chance to know him and be in his life, knows that you couldnt have asked for a better person to know and love.....I have had the pleasure of spending time with this wonderful human being and every minute I spent was filled with laughter and happiness. He use to love to eat and didnt gain a lb but always wanted to workout....lol we went to eat almost every weekend and spent the remainder months of his life hanging out at his home....he was a privite person, kept his privite business to himself for the most part. A few days before his death, I went to see him over to a friends house while he fixed on a car....when he had to work late, he would text me and send me pictures of the area he was at......I use to tease him about kicking back while everyone else was working......so I am saying this to say, everyone has their memories of Carl, as for me, I had some of the best cause I was just recently with him before it happened and I can remember the smile he had when I pulled up that day......just a wonderful man and I will truely miss him but the memories will live on.

My friend was one of the last men left on this earth that knew how to treat a woman. He was kind, loving and thoughtful, we planted veggies and fruit in his backyard and I had teased him about growing cucumbers in the front...I was with him 4 nights before the incident, we had plans to enjoy each others company last weekend, he was so kind that he had offered his home to his God brother and his family while we went somewhere else and stayed for that weekend. I have spent a lot of time with Carl and I can say every moment was filled with joy and happiness and laughter...I miss him so much as im sure all of his family and friends do ....I will never forget the last thing he text to me, the saturday before his death and I will keep it locked in my ph as long as I can and in my heart forever......

First of all, they S@@@ people are saying about Carl Bryan Washington just freaking amazes me. I have known this man since I was 17 years old. And anyone that truly know him, knows Taco Bell Gardena.
He was far from some freaking Gang-Banger. And anyone who lives in Carson(especially on the DA side) knows that EVERY FREAKING SUMMER things happen over there to innocent people. Example: the young man who attended Curtiss middle school, and someone pulled up and asked him for directions, he could not hear what they were saying so approached the car just a little more and BANG a middle school student was killed for nothing. What about a shooting that happened on Helmick, not short of Harlan one summer night. What about the Carls next door neighbors house getting shot up.
CARL BRYAN WASHINGTON WAS NOT A GANG MEMBER. He was one of the last dudes in the this world that stood by HIS WORD BEING HIS WORD.
My prayers go out to his family. Such a good man, who had a short life. WE NEVER KNOW WHEN OUR TIME IS COMING.

Dead is for real,the people on the site are act like a bunch of that SPECIAL time of the month females, show some damn respect, as you would want others to show your relatives. When you or one of your relatives make this list. There are a lot of people out here right now with shakey past does make them bad, or were they doing what they had to do to survive?
I had to get me some homeboys, when i was growing up being the only kid. I got tired of getting my tail kicked trying to be neutral and the good kick. your either a sheep or a wolf!

Let's celebrate Carl's life! Not place blame. I find it VERY hard to believe that anyone would put themselves in danger and risk being shot and for what? What did she have to gain? Suspicious would be if she left the scene or didn't cooperate with the police. Suspicious would be if she was inside the house and never called 911. Why can't it be what it was; a random act of violence? Who cares if he loved her, liked her, or was just with her? Obviously he felt something, whether you like it, love it or accept it.
In this situation would Carl really be able to tell the story to a "T"? Could you?
I hope you are never put in such an unpleasant, life altering experience. I hope in your lifetime you never are accused or talked about with disdain. But I do hope in your lifetime your heart isn't so hard. That you accept what you can never change and understand that God has a master plan and He doesn't have to share it with you.
Be peaceful, loving, and open minded. The devil is busy....don't let him keep using you.
God is Love. I love you and you can't do a thing about it!
CELEBRATE CARL'S LIFE...Be thankful you were fortunate enough to know him. Accentuate the positive, let go of the negative, ugliness it will only make you bitter not better.

The very thing you are saying people should not talk about, you are doing. On top of that you are putting another spin on it. Talking about telling different stories. Why taint the memory you supposedly care so much about? Why would you even say that? That vibe you are giving is not very freind-like. Sounds like you have a little hate/jealously going on. If you want to honor his memory then do so. Don't tell others to keep their negative comments to themselves and then you bring out hurtful/negative words. It's so unnecessary. If you care about the family, why fuel a fire? And add on to their pain. Where are your encouraging words you speak about? Unless you know something you are not telling. And if you do, YOU, should be going to the police because you are such a friend.
It's so easy to spew uneducated, uninformed statements. You start off with your anger, then you have pseudo comforting words for the family. Sounds a little bi-polar to me. Enough said. You don't need to respond to prove an ignorant point. Let someone that has nice things to say have your space. You, friend, are wasting it!!

Carl, Carl, Carl. It's taking a lot out of me to do this, but I must honor you. You were a great guy and I respected you to the utmost. I'm gonna miss you and the great advice you gave me. I'm praying for Daphne too. I know you would want me to. I know the bond you were building with her. It's not about us, it's about YOU. It matters not what people say, as we all can see there are some evil hateful people in this world. Just know you were loved by many and will be missed. We had you here on earth, but God has you now. Rest my brother, for we know you are safe. Watch over all your loved ones. Encourage us to do God's will. Be our guardian angel. Everthing in this life happens for a reason, although we may not know it now. You were a gem and now you shine bright in heaven. Everything is gonna be alright. By definition –
Hate crimes (also known as bias-motivated crimes) occur when a perpetrator targets a victim because of his or her perceived membership in a certain social group, usually defined by racial group, religion, sexual orientation, disability, class, ethnicity, nationality, age, gender, gender identity, or political affiliation.[1]
"Hate crime" generally refers to criminal acts which are seen to have been motivated by hatred of one or more of the listed conditions. Incidents may involve physical assault, damage to property, bullying, harassment, verbal abuse or insults, or offensive graffiti or letters (hate mail).[2]
Everyone is entitled to their opinion but I know for a fact that some Latino gangs and Black gangs have real beef and resort to killing each other over it. I could name several specific gangs but I don’t want to glorify them nor give them ammunition for another senseless act. If you do further research, you will find this out. The facts are facts.

I will pass no judgment on Mr. Washington because I don’t know him or his background but whether you believe it or not some people kill other people simply because of race. If he posed no immediate threat to these perpetrators, what other motive would they have?

When you lose someone you love, you hurt. My friend and her family are hurting....badly, as is his family. We have prayed together for both families. We are all only here for a season. Only God can decide our time on this earth, as we all are just passing through. Time will heal all wounds, but as we all go through this time, let us remember the person's life we must celebrate. Carl, we know, was a good person. I will only remember the fun times I personally watched him share with Daphne. I will remember the smiles and the fun we/they had. Life is a gift. Treasure it. We never want to see our loved ones leave us especially in such a tragic way. He didn't deserve this, we all feel this way. We must all be encouraged, lean on the Lord, trust and beleive Him. Those who did this will see, what goes around comes around. Vengence is mine said the Lord. We need not worry. God will handle this.
So I say to my friend Daphne, lean not to your own understanding, God will see you through. To Carl's family, although we have never met, Carl is at the right hand of God watching us, telling us to be strong. Love one another as God loves us. We are all connected by this.
Be strong, pray, and trust in a Mighty God. He will never leave you nor forsake you!

Check this out, and I mean no disrespect to this mans family or loved ones by even posting a comment in a place ment to be an online memorial. I am from 190 and I have never heard of a big monk or a big shiphead and I am 35 year old so I think I would have heard of them before. Not to mention someone else just said that he just moved there so I dont know why someone would try to associate a person with a gang that wasnt. Maybe to discredit the gang with having lost a member I guess. As for the hate crime, let's do the math here, 4 ese's are riding around the neighborhood looking for Crips to kill but find a mature man walking his girlfriend to the car. Obviously they pull up and shout their gang and he either doesnt respond or tells them he doesnt bang and they kill him anyway. That is a hate crime. They killed him anyway because he was black in an enemy neighborhood (I guess, depends on where they were from) and he was an easy target. Unless there was some personal beef between the shooters and the victims there is no way that man said something aggressive back to them in that situation, risking having his girlfriend killed as well. Wake up yall, this is 2010 and things have changed.

I'll try this again, since for whatever reason the LA Times decided to not post my first comment.

What does this have to do with a hate crime? If you think it is, then please provide proof, otherwise it's clear you're using this tragedy as a vehicle for your agenda.

As for the "statistics" you cited, pardon me if I don't take them too seriously, as "hate crimes" are demonstrably reported very inconsistently. I'll give you an example: Over a four month period in Denver last year, over 30 attacks were coordinated and orchestrated by black men against whites downtown, specifically targeted because of the color of their skin. There was even a homicide. NONE of the perps were charged with a hate crime. Why do you think that is? If roving bands of white skinheads roamed the streets in search of blacks to beat and rob do you think they would be charged with hate crimes? Absolutely, and it would be the top story on every media outlet from coast to coast. As it stands now, I doubt many outside of Denver have heard of it. Google it, you'll find stories from everyone from the Denver Post to 9news, etc.

So again, pardon me if I have to laugh at these so-called "statistics".

Rap stars who have everything going for them can't leave thug life behind. Think Biggy and Tupac. Do you think 'joe average" is going to be able? i am a Carson resident for 10 yrs..about 5 blks from the murder.
.This is/has been a lovely area, lots of "pride of ownership", interest in your neighbors. We are losing our neighborhood, the gap between the "haves' and the "have nots" is getting bigger, and until we address these issues it will only get worse.
i don't presume to know what Mr washington was about. I only offer the comment that people are VERY complex. Nothing surpises me, and do we really know anyone? We are all a different person to everyone who knows us,the elephant and the blind men fable.
Just know, we are in this gang territory, and why would 4 Mexican bangers be all the way in our middle class neighborhood in the middle of the night..randomly...just saying.
This does not negate the terrible pain to his family and loved ones. every soul on earth is someones baby.

syscom, I doubt its his lack of education. Actually Carson CA is the ONLY city in America where the African American median income is higher than whites. A lot of good, well to due black folks live here. The area where monks gang is from is actually quite nice. He chooses to be ignorant, not b/c of educational opportunities or money. Choice, his choice...

Monks term "surrats" is a derogatory term for surenos or so-cal mexican gang members. He is insinuating they are responsible and are the enemies towards his gang. As for the "messicants" term; that is a derogatory towards Mexicans. "Bidness" is slang term for business. I am somewhat shocked that the HR allowed his comments as "messicants" is an insult to the mexican community. I wonder if I used the "n" word in describing African Americans would they allow that? Maybe I should and see...on second thoughts, nah...*rolling eyes at the hr report*

Carl Washington was a good, hard working, loving man. He loved his family, friends and especially his best friend Tracy. I am one of those people who usually stays in the background, but on this, I just have to speak out. As the previous reader said lots of people start their work days at 4:00am in the morning or around that time including my husband and aunt. Does that make them a bad people? Maybe when Carl purchased his home the neighborhood wasn't like it is now. Have you taken a look at the economy now? Who can sell their home now, especially in this type of neighborhood. Not all people who live in that area or the surrounding area are involved in gangs or drugs. You do have upstanding citizens left in this world. Thank you God! This has hit his family and friends all pretty hard. Eventhough you are commenting on what you are reading from the Daily Breeze, please don't judge a book by its cover.

Carl was one of my best friends! His transition to GOD in our eyes was UNTIMELY to say the least. I pray that God place CONVICTION on the hearts of those involved in the murder and God's Will be done. Freedom of speech is our right but please post in good taste only what is necessary and in honor of him. We must remember he was a man of Integrity and lived a life of Service to anyone who asked. He had to learn to spell the word NO because he rarely could say it. He was loved by MANY and made everyone feel special with the time and hours he would put in talking and sharing about life situations and solutions. His smile, giggle and hospitality was genuine and he truly wanted everyone to be COMFORTABLE. Let us all come together in his memory the way he would bring us together when he was amongst us. Smiles, BBQ's, Concerts, Movies, Traveling, Laughs, Music and UNITY.

No need to call anyone names. I am pointing out what the paper stated. Stated it was "gang-related." I know that does not mean the victim was/is but maybe the suspects were? In any case, I have my opinions on what this 44yr old man was doing out and about at 4AM. Why was he out at that time? This forum/blog is for people to ask questions and make comments. My comments were not disrespectful nor were they intended to hurt your loved one. From the sound of things, seems like this cat was on the up and up. Working, living a good life yet I have to wonder why he was out at 4am? Its a young mans world and as a lifelong Carson resident the only people out at this time is drug users, dealers, and gang-bangers. I live in Victoria Park and I know what has gone down the last 20 or so yrs between the African American gang ECC 190 and the various local Hispanic gangs in Carson. The area where Carl was killed is home to ECC190. Do you see how I am deducing where I am coming from? I am going to post what the Daily Breeze posted so you can see where I got my info. Please enlighten us and let us know what happened. I am interested.

"A 44-year-old man was fatally shot during an apparent gang-related shooting attack Sunday in Carson, a sheriff's deputy said.

"The victim was identified as Carl Washington, a resident of Carson," said Betsy Magdaleno, an investigator with the Los Angeles County Department of Coroner.

Washington was pronounced dead at an area hospital, said Deputy Lillian Peck.

Carson resident~ You could not have been paying attention to what you read about Carl Washington. There is no where in this article that HE was a gang banger- He was a 40 year old man who from all the other comments was a GOOD MAN, A WORKING MAN AND A MAN OF INTEGRITY AND A MAN IN-LOVE.So stop and think before you write something as UN-INFORMED AS THAT LAST PART OF YOUR COMMENT. To his co-workers and people he may have met and left a imprint on your life , keep him in your memory, keep his good spiritedness alive by doing some good deed for another in his memory. All I know is that Carl and Daphne brought food and went to the Downtown Womens Shelter and prepared it with Daphne's friends. They donated clothes and food as well. They helped people. He was excited about her and the things they did. I know they took lots of trips and did lots of things together. I know he was a nice person who did not deserve this. He was a MAN. He was always respectful and had a big heart. He nor she was not into any gang life. They both worked everyday! She has a MBA, works in a corprate office and ran for Compton's School Board AND was an ex-LAPD officer. She is no slouch! He worked for AT&T for 10 years and was just celebrating his 10th anniversary there. Sad times now. Hurt hearts now...We never want to see our loved ones pass away in such a violent way. Especially those that meant and did well. I saw him with Daphne and she was his girl and he was her love. Two good people. I hope and pray justice is served. I hope and pray hearts are healed. I hope and pray lives are restored. Its devastating, hurtful and sad. Carl is gone too soon. Peace and Blessings to all.

Carl was a nice young man. I double dated with him and Daphne. He seemed to really be falling for her, at least he told me that. I'm happy someone was in his life that he cared for and had good times with. Great memories of a good person. I know he was a private person and didn't share a lot of his personal business, but he was a rare dude. I will miss him.....There are some really horrible uncaring people in this world and even though he was not one of them he was a victim of their cruel behavior. We need to come together people. Life is so short. These people were looking for trouble and they will get caught. God will not let an angel fall without someone paying a price. My thoughts and prayers to his family, to Daphne, and to all his many friends. May God Rest his Soul.
