A story for every victim

Carlos Santana Doroteo, 49

Carlos Santana Doroteo, a 49-year-old Latino, died Saturday, Feb. 6, after he was shot in the 12800 block of Cook Street in the Willowbrook neighborhood of Los Angeles, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

The evening was warm, and many people were outside “socializing and just hanging out,” when a gunman walked up and began shooting, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Lt. Steve Jauch.

Four people were struck by the gunfire, Jauch said: Doroteo; two Latino adults; and a Latina teenager.

Doroteo collapsed on the sidewalk with multiple gunshot wounds to the torso, Jauch said. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:05 p.m., according to coroner’s records.

The other three victims survived, Jauch said.

Doroteo lived in the neighborhood on another street, Jauch said and had been walking south on Cook Street when he was shot. Investigators don’t have a motive for the shooting and little information about the shooter, who was described only as a black male.

The victims were not related, Jauch said, and it’s not clear whether they were even socializing with each other when the shooting began.

Doroteo was not a gang member, Jauch said, but there are gangs in the area, and investigators are looking at the possibility that the shooting was gang-related.
