A story for every victim

Carolyn Barney, 29

Carolyn Barney, a 29-year-old black woman, was found dead in a vacant lot in the 9700 block of Grandee Avenue in Watts on May 29, 1987.

Two years later, Louis Craine was convicted of her murder and three others. Barney's body was found in the same block where Craine's parents lived.

His defense attorneys portrayed Craine, 32, an unemployed construction worker, as an illiterate man with a fourth-grade education and an IQ of 69, unable to kill anyone.

Craine was sentenced to death. Within months of his conviction, he died in a prison hospital of an undisclosed ailment.
