A story for every victim

Carolyn Avon Lovett, 55

Carolyn Lovett, a 55-year-old black woman, was shot and killed Sunday, May 16, in the 3000 block of 11th Avenue in Jefferson Park, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Lovett and her boyfriend had been staying at the duplex of Lloyd Wade,  81, for a few days, authorities said. Since 2003, the boyfriend provided in-home care to Wade, police said.

Police believe Wade was fed up with Lovett and wanted her out of his home. Their dispute spilled into the front yard Sunday evening, when he allegedly shot her with his .45-caliber revolver, killing her, police said.

“He didn’t want her staying there anymore,” said LAPD Det. Sean Hansen. “Just a personality conflict.”

Wade had no history of violence, Hansen said.

Lovett's boyfriend was a family friend of Wade’s. He and Lovett didn’t have anywhere to stay and had been living with Wade with his permission, Hansen said.

The caretaker, who cooked meals for the man and performed other tasks around the house, was not home at the time of the dispute.

Wade, a retired widower, was arrested. He appeared remorseful during conversations with police, Hansen said.
