A story for every victim

Charles Phillip Shepard, 58

Charles Phillip Shepard, a 58-year-old black man, was fatally stabbed Sunday, July 14, in the 5200 block of South Hoover Street in Vermont Square, according to L.A. County coroner’s records.

Shepard walked outside his home around noon and was stabbed, said Det. Supervisor Chris Barling with the LAPD’s 77th Street Division.

Shepard died at a hospital at 5:38 p.m., according to coroner’s records.

On the day of the stabbing, Shepard’s neighbor, Arthur Kirkland, 55, was arrested on suspicion of murder, Barling said.

Investigators believe Shepard got into a physical altercation with his neighbor the day before.

Kirkland was charged with one count of murder with a use of a deadly weapon allegation and pleaded not guilty July 16, said Jane Robison, a spokeswoman with the L.A. County district attorney’s office.

His next court date is Aug. 26.

Kirkland is being held on $1-million bail, according to L.A. County Sheriff’s Department records.
