Charles Wallace Westby, 23

Charles Wallace Westby, a 23-year-old black man, was fatally wounded on Sunday, June 2,  in the 3100 block of West 59th Street in Hyde Park, according to L.A. County coroner’s records.

Westby was killed while standing in the back of an apartment building, said LAPD Det. Chris Barling, with the 77th Street Division. About 8:05 p.m., neighbors heard an argument and multiple shots, Barling said. 

Detectives believe Westby is an acquaintance of the shooter.

Westby was taken to a hospital, where he died at 8:52 p.m., said Ed Winter, a spokesman with the coroner’s office.

[Update, Oct. 22, 2013: Wayne Gray, 36, and Jerry Donald Wilson, 18, have been arrested and charged in connection with Westby's death.

Gray was charged with three counts of murder with a special allegation for the personal discharge of a handgun. He has pleaded not guilty.

Wilson has been charged with one count of murder and also pleaded not guilty.

Gray and Wilson are both due back in court Nov. 5, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney's office.]
