A story for every victim

Cherokee Monique Parker, 31

Cherokee Monique Parker, a 31-year-old black woman, was shot and killed Sunday, June 14 in the 700 block of West 115th Street in Vermont Vista, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Shortly before 3 a.m., people were gathered at a birthday party in the backyard of a home when a man got into an argument with another attendee, LAPD Det. Dave Garrido said. The man was asked to leave and went outside, got into a pickup truck and opened fire as he drove away.

Parker, who was not involved in the dispute, was found in the driveway and taken to a hospital, Garrido said. A 51-year-old woman was also shot in the ankle, but she was treated and released from a hospital.

Parker was pronounced dead at 3:31 a.m., said Ed Winter, assistant chief of investigations for the coroner’s office.

Anyone with information is asked to call the LAPD's Criminal Gang Homicide Division at (323) 786-5111. Those who wish to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.
