Cheryl Diane Tyler, a 63-year-old black woman, was found fatally stabbed Saturday, April 9, in the 1000 block of West 83rd Street in Vermont Knolls, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

About 5:15 p.m., Los Angeles police officers responded to a call regarding a disturbance in the courtyard of an apartment complex, said LAPD Det. Dave Garrido.

Officers found a 44-year-old black man with a knife in his waistband who was unresponsive to questions. Officers then conducted a welfare check in a nearby apartment and found Tyler’s body in the living room.

The man was taken into custody and remains jailed on an unrelated matter, according to online jail records.

Police believe that the man lived with Tyler but that the relationship was not romantic.
