Compton man who slammed infant son to floor is sentenced to prison for the killing

A Compton man was sentenced May 21 to state prison for killing his 6-month-old son in 2012, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney's office.

David Gomez, 26, pleaded no contest to the voluntary manslaughter of his son, Abel Gomez, and was immediately sentenced to 16 years in prison.

As part of a plea agreement, Gomez also admitted an allegation of causing great bodily injury to his son, according to prosecutors.

Gomez's plea came as prosecutors were trying him for a second time, after his first case was declared a mistrial, said Ricardo Santiago, a spokesman for the district attorney's office.

On Oct. 3, 2012, Gomez was taking care of Abel and his other son, age 2, while his wife was working, prosecutors said.

Abel wouldn't stop crying, so Gomez allegedly shook and slammed him to the floor.

Abel suffered a fractured skull and died at a hospital the next day.
