A story for every victim

Dominick Gonzales, 38

Dominick Gonzales, a 38-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Tuesday, April 19, in the 13100 block of Valley Boulevard in Bassett, an unincorporated community in the San Gabriel Valley, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

The shooting occurred at the El Jalisco Café, where Gonzales and three other men were having dinner, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Joe Mendoza.

The four men appeared to have a normal meal, according to witnesses, and had just walked outside near a  patio of diners when gunfire erupted, Mendoza said.

“We know there were at least two shooters in that group,” Mendoza said, “but as soon as the shooting started, everybody put their heads down, so we haven’t been able to confirm who was shooting.”

Investigators are hoping that film from nearby surveillance cameras will help them identify the shooters, Mendoza said. A taco truck in the restaurant's parking lot was also busy with customers, The Times reported.

Gonzales was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:16 p.m. with multiple gunshot wounds, according to coroner’s records. The three other men fled the scene, Mendoza said.

A 50-year-old woman who was dining on the patio was struck in the leg during the gunfight, Mendoza said. She was treated at a local hospital and is expected to survive, he said.
