A story for every victim

Eddie Hernandez, 22

Eddie Hernandez, a 22-year-old Latino, died Saturday, June 11, after he was shot in the 1900 block of East 78th Street in the Florence-Firestone neighborhood of South Los Angeles, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Hernandez was standing in a driveway with several people at a party in the residential area about 9:15 p.m., when two men on a mini bike rode up to the group, said Los Angeles County Sheriff's Lt. Steve Jauch.

One of the men pulled out a handgun and opened fire, Jauch said. Hernandez was struck in the head, and another Latino in his 20s in the lower torso, Jauch said.

Both men were taken to a nearby hospital. Hernandez was pronounced dead at 12:16 a.m. on June 11. The other man was a in serious condition but is expected to survive, Jauch said.

The men on the mini bike drove west on East 78th Street, Jauch said. No description of the men is available.

Investigators are trying to determine the motive and whether there’s a connection with two other fatal shootings that occurred in the neighborhood within the next nine hours, Jauch said.

“We’re looking at causal factors to see if there’s a gang nexus or any nexus between the three shootings,” Jauch said. “We won’t rule it out, but we haven’t confirmed it.”
