A story for every victim

Fernando Cruz Garcia, 23

Fernando Garcia, a 23-year-old Latino, was attacked with a machete and killed Wednesday, Aug. 25, in the 15000 block of Larch Avenue in Lawndale, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Garcia was at his apartment about 12:50 a.m. when authorities allege that one of his roommates, Carlos Donis, stabbed him to death. Garcia was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to a news release from the Los Angeles County district attorney's office, Donis, a 25-year-old Latino, also assaulted another roommate. Prosecutors said the victim was taken to a hospital and remains in critical condition with injuries to the head.

Following the incident, Donis fled the scene but was arrested a short time later by Lennox sheriff deputies.

On Aug. 27, he was charged with one count each of murder, attempted murder and aggravated mayhem as well as special allegations of use of a deadly weapon and inflicting great bodily injury. If convicted, Donis faces up to life in prison.

He is currently being held at the North County Correctional Facility in lieu of $3.05-million bail. His next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 15 at Torrance Municipal Court.
