A story for every victim

Fernando Rojo Jr., 26

Fernando Rojo Jr., a 26 year-old Latino, was shot and killed Saturday, March 19, in the 1500 block of West 53rd Street in Vermont Square, according to authorities and L.A. County coroner’s records.

Shortly after midnight, Rojo and a group of friends were hanging out in the area when a white mid-sized SUV pulled up with several males inside, said Los Angeles police Det. Chris Barling.

A person inside asked “Where you from?” and opened fire, Barling said.

Rojo and a 23-year-old Latino were struck. Both were taken to the hospital, where Rojo was pronounced dead. The 23-year-old is expected to survive.

The SUV drove east on West 53rd Street. The victims are not gang members, but police say the assailants are affiliated with gangs.
