A story for every victim

Francisco Miguel Tomas, 48

Francisco Miguel Tomas, a 48-year-old Latino, was killed Tuesday, July 22 near Sepulveda Boulevard and Hatteras Street in Van Nuys, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Shortly before 5 a.m., Miguel Tomas was powerwashing the parking lot of a Target store when he was approached by a man and stabbed several times, said LAPD Capt. Ivan Minsal with the Van Nuys Division.

Co-workers and other witnesses tried to help, but the man, who appeared “bizarre” and “intoxicated,” continued to stab Miguel Tomas, Minsal said.

At some point during the altercation, Miguel Tomas was also shot. The man, who has been identified as Erick Renteria, a 24-year-old Latino, was taken into custody that morning.

Renteria was charged July 25 with one count of murder, one count of  possession of a firearm by a felon and two counts of resisting executive officer, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.

Renteria pleaded not guilty to the charges and is due back in court Aug. 4.
