Henrie Washington, 55 [Updated]

Henrie Washington, a 55-year-old black man, died Monday, May 24 in the 2000 block of Harding Street in Long Beach more than two decades after he was shot and paralyzed in Illinois, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Coroner's officials believe Washington, a resident of Long Beach, died from complications to a gunshot wound he suffered in the 1980s, which is why his death has been listed as a homicide.

According to a coroner's spokeswoman, Washington was shot by his brother-in-law in Illinois and had been quadriplegic since the incident.

Washington died at his residence at 6:32 a.m., according to coroner's records.

As of May 26, an autopsy had not been completed, and the coroner's office was unable to provide an exact cause of death.

The coroner's office had no additional information about the case.

[Updated Feb. 28, 2011: Coroner's officials said Washington had several health problems, including cirrhosis or scarring of the liver. They are unable to conclude whether the shooting that resulted in his quadriplegia caused his death. Washington's cause of death was ruled "undetermined."]
