A story for every victim

Jacare Demar Smith, 36

Jacare Demar Smith, a 36-year-old black man, was shot and killed Tuesday, Nov. 15, in the 3800 block of El Segundo Boulevard in Hawthorne, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records

Smith was standing with two other men in front of Young's Liquor Mart at the southwest corner of El Segundo Boulevard and Doty Avenue about 3:21 p.m., said Los Angeles County Sheriff's Lt. Joe Mendoza.

Witnesses told investigators that a dark-colored four-door sedan pulled into the parking lot and three black men got out, Mendoza said. The men who got out of the car had a brief argument with one of the three men, then one of the men who got out of the car pulled out a gun and began firing.

Smith was shot multiple times in the upper torso, Mendoza said. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 3:30 p.m., according to coroner's records.

One man with Smith was shot in the hand, Mendoza said. He was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. The other man with Smith was not injured, Mendoza said.

After the shooting, the three men got back into the car and drove away, heading south on Doty Avenue.

Investigators believe the shooting was gang-related, based on descriptions of the attackers, Mendoza said.
