A story for every victim

Jamal Damiaan Lindsey, 18

Jamal Damiaan Lindsey, an 18-year-old black man, was fatally shot Saturday April 20, near the intersection of Orange Avenue and Phillips Street in Long Beach, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Derome Harper, 20, was arrested early Sunday morning in the case that police say began with a dispute between the two men in the 1200 block of Phillips Street.

When Lindsey got into a car to leave the scene about 9:10 p.m. Saturday, Harper allegedly opened fire, “striking him multiple times in the upper torso,” according to the Long Beach Police Department.

A woman driving the car flagged down nearby officers, who were conducting an unrelated investigation. The officers rushed Lindsey to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Officers returned to Phillips Street, where they took Harper into custody. He was booked on suspicion of murder and was being held at the Long Beach City Jail without bail.

Those wishing to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS.
