James Green Jr., a 35-year-old black man, was shot and killed Wednesday, Feb. 2, in the 200 block of North Spring Avenue in Compton, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

The attack occurred shortly before 1 p.m. near Compton Boulevard, according to a statement from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Green was standing outside with a friend when two people approached him on foot. One assailant opened fire, then both escaped in a vehicle, authorities said.

Paramedics took Green to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. According to coroner's records, he was shot several times in the torso and legs.

Investigators said the shooting appeared to be gang-related.
