James Jay Smith, 20

James Jay Smith, a 20-year-old black man, was shot and killed Monday, Sept. 1, near West Adams Boulevard and South Dalton Avenue in Adams-Normandie, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Smith and a 17-year-old were standing at an intersection when a person walked up to the two and began shooting, according to a news release from the Los Angeles Police Department.

Smith was pronounced dead on the way to the hospital. The 17-year-old was wounded but expected to survive.

The gunman and another man, described by police as two male blacks, fled in a light-colored vehicle.

This really breaks my heart to hear the news of this young mans death. I only had the privilege of meeting James once. Here I am just getting off work sitting at the bus stop and he comes walking up sits next to me and asks how my day was. My first thought was that this young man was Tryna "halla" lol. And it wasn't until a few moments later that I would learn how much a bright and genuine young man he was. I did not know James as James, he introduced himself to me as "leeair" and I remember thinking what a nice name and it fit such a handsome young man. I will nvr forget his smile. I enjoyed our conversation where we were able to encourage one another on staying positive and following our dreams of making it in this world. Once again I did not except to have such a deep and touching conversation with this young man in such a small amount of time but the conversation flowed naturally. I could tell that he had slot on his mind that day and he just needed someone to talk to, little did he know I needed the same. After saying our goodbyes James got in the car with a friend that was passing by I remember smiling to myself and saying a prayer that God kept that young man safe. And I know he did until it was time for James to come home. A day no prayer could save because when our father calls we have no choice but I come to him. It saddens me because just yesterday I saw a young man and it excited me because I thought it was him and got a bit disappointed that it wasn't lol and this morning I ended up seeing his obituary that was given to one of my family members on her bed and my heart sank. I thank God for the 20 years of life and wisdom He gave James, and though I'm sure we all wish he would have had more we can be grateful for the memories we all have. I know I will remember those 15 mins. My deepest prayers go out to the family of James and I pray that God gives you all peace. And to James thank you for touching my life, gracing me with your beautiful smile and encouraging words. I knew from our conversation that you were not like the rest of young men out here and I know you had big plans for your life. It's obvious that you touched my life snd I only pray that I touched yours the way you say I did. Rest peacefully sweetheart, until we meet again.... Ms Lady :)
