Jesse John Pelayo (2009-03-15)

Jesse Pelayo, a 24-year-old Filipino man, died Sunday, March 15, 2009, three days after he was hit in the head in a fight between two groups that had just left a nightclub in Long Beach, authorities said.

The fight took place about 1:50 a.m. Thursday, March 12 on Aquarium Way, Long Beach police said. Officers discovered Pelayo, of Carson, injured in a parking structure south of Shoreline Drive. He was taken to a hospital in serious condition.

"Due to the severity of the victim's injuries, homicide detectives responded and began investigating the incident," police said in a news release.

Pelayo died from his injuries Sunday afternoon. Police arrested Chhailee Rey, 34, of Long Beach, and Michael Camou, 31, of Wilmington in connection with Pelayo's homicide.

The Long Beach Press Telegram reported that prosecutors charged Rey with murder. An arraignment for Camou was postponed until March 30. The newspaper reported that Camou was working as a bouncer at the Mai Tai Club on the night of the fight.

Long Beach Police detectives said they believed there were multiple witnesses to the incident, which took place as the nightclub crowd left for the night. Anyone with information is asked to contact Homicide Dets. Daniel Mendoza and Todd Johnson at (562) 570-7244.
