A story for every victim

Jesus Flores, 57

Jesus Flores, 57, a Latino man, was stabbed to death in his family home in South Los Angeles and died Sunday, March 2. Flores' 36-year-old son, who has a history of mental problems, has been charged with his murder.

According to LAPD South Bureau Det. Mark Hahn, Flores and his son had an argument that turned into a fight, and the son pulled out a folding knife and stabbed Flores several times. The son then fled in a car southbound on the 110 Freeway, and went through a stop light after exiting at Rosecrans Boulevard.

A California Highway Patrol vehicle signaled for him to pull over, and he sped away. The CHP officers pursued him and took him into custody at 85th and Hoover streets.

The CHP officers didn't know they had just arrested a murder suspect, though the son had blood on his clothes, Hahn said. They booked him for felony evasion. LAPD detectives checked the computer and found their suspect had already been arrested.

Hahn said family members said the son had spent time in a psychiatric facility in the past, and had recently stopped taking his medications.

[An earlier version of this post gave Flores' date of death as March 3 but coroner's records indicate that they determined that he died the previous night.]
