Jose Cruz, 57

Jose Cruz, a 57-year-old Latino, died Friday, Feb. 2, after he was shot near South Savannah and East Fourth streets in Boyle Heights, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Cruz was at Evergreen Park sitting on a bench with other people and drinking beer when a car drove up about 9:30 p.m. Feb. 1, Los Angeles Police Det. Jose Ramirez said.

A passenger got out and fired multiple rounds at the group and then drove away.

Cruz was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:50 a.m. Feb. 2, according to coroner’s records.

No one else was injured in the shooting. The car was described by witnesses as a dark-colored sedan, Ramirez said.
