Kayla Yolanda Huerta, a 17-year-old Latina, was shot and killed Monday, June 18, in the 700 block of West Sepulveda Street in San Pedro, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Shortly before 2:30 a.m., Kayla was hanging out inside a light-colored Lexus sedan waiting for someone who lived in the area when a person inside shot her at close range, said Los Angeles Police Officer Jeffrey Tiffin.

The gunman became upset by something that was said, but the exact circumstances are unclear, Tiffin said.

No one else was injured. Kayla was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:41 a.m., according to coroner’s records.

Luis Aurelio Morales, a 25-year-old Latino, was arrested June 28 on suspicion of murder, according to online jail records.

Morales was charged with murder, assault with a firearm and possession of a firearm by a felon according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.

Morales is due back in court Aug. 24, according to court records.
