A story for every victim

Keanu Ortiz, 20

Keanu Ortiz, a 20-year-old Latino, died Sunday, June 3, after he was shot in the 900 block of Fraser Avenue in East Los Angeles, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Ortiz was walking near his home with his older brother, Russell Lawrence Ortiz, 27, on Saturday, June 2, when a Latino drove up beside them in a full-sized black SUV about 1:45 p.m., according to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Derrick Alfred.

The three men got into an argument — “Witnesses heard yelling” — and the suspect shot both brothers before driving away, according to Alfred.

Both brothers were taken to the hospital. Russell Ortiz was pronounced dead the following morning at 1:13 a.m. Keanu Ortiz was pronounced dead a few hours later, at 6:53 a.m.

The cause of death for both men was listed as gunshot wounds to the chest, coupled with medical conditions. Russell had pulmonary dysfunction, according to coroner records, and Keanu had severe coronary artery disease.

Investigators later found the SUV they believe was driven in the attack, but did not find the gunman or the gun, Alfred said.
