Keyonta Muhammad Ansari (2013-05-07)

Keyonta Muhammad Ansari, a 22-year-old black man, died Tuesday May 7, after he was gunned down in the 5300 block of South Van Ness Avenue in Vermont Square, according to Los Angeles police officials.

Ansari had gotten out of his car shortly before 9 a.m. and was waiting for a friend to get ready to go play basketball when a black man exited a white two-door vehicle and fired more than once toward Ansari, said LAPD Det. Sal LaBarbera.

The gunman then got back into the car and headed north on Van Ness Avenue, according to a police incident report. Ansari was taken to California Hospital Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 12:30 p.m.

Police believe the shooting is gang-related but that Ansari was not a gang member.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact LAPD Dets. Fontes and Ramirez at (213) 485-4341. Those wishing to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS.
