Los Angeles woman sentenced in downtown shooting

A Los Angeles woman was sentenced Dec. 14, 2011, to state prison for the November 2009 shooting death of Sheila Zaldana, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.

Michelle Cato, 29, was sentenced to 57 years to life and ordered to pay $7,500 in restitution.

On Oct. 21, after deliberating for about a day, a jury convicted Cato of the second-degree murder of Zaldana and the second-degree attempted murder of her son.

Zaldana, a 46-year-old black woman, was shot in the head Nov. 23, 2009, in the 500 block of San Julian Street in downtown Los Angeles. She was transported to a hospital where she was pronounced dead at 4:13 p.m.

Cato was immediately detained near the LAPD Central Area police station on San Julian Street.
