Lovell May III, 19 [Updated]

Lovell May III, a 19-year-old black man, was shot and killed Thursday, Jan. 28, at Brighton and 78th Streets in Manchester Square, according to Los Angeles County coroner's officials.

Ed Winter, a spokesman for the coroner's office, said May was standing on the sidewalk when someone walked up and shot him at 9:45 p.m. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:11 p.m.

[Editor's note: Coroner's officials have identified May as a woman in both their records and in two phone calls from a Times reporter asking for clarification. Readers have contacted The Times to say that May was a man. We will continue to pursue the matter with the coroner's office.
